I have a friends Ford F150 pickup coming up next week...he was by yesterday evening so that I could have a look at the rims..polished aluminum that are going to need some high speed polishing...he asked if I do engines...No problem...the motor is dirty but not super bad..I've worked on worse....then he said you can't get the spark plugs wet..what?.... I asked why?....bare with me here...... he said that each plug has a separate coil over the top and if it gets wet can cause a short or something like that...I'm thinking this is a 4x4 off road type of truck, surely going threw creeks and rivers and wet weather driving would cause some water to fly up in there...just a guess

So I'm asking fellow Ford truck drivers for some advice on this one...anything to be concerned about here?

The process that I use for engines is APC, brushes-a-plenty and low pressure rinse with water then a water based dressing.
 
We have a whole fleet of Ford van with the same engine and we have pressured washed, steamed cleaned and washed with Gunk and a hose and never had a problem.

Thanks this is a real good friend and a service writer for Ford...I was thinking that there could not be anything that I could do to hurt this thing short of blasting it with water...but sounds like you guys are doing that already with no problem
 
well now wait a second. Those 4.6 and 5.4 engines with coil on plug are the ONLY engine I have ever had a problem with, and it has happened more then once. What the problem is is that the spark plug wells int eh vavlve covers will collect water. It has nothign to do with gett8ign the coils or plug connection wet, it has to do with water getting into the plug wells on that particluar engine.

Beleive me, $140+ on two occasions has caused me to be VERY carefiull on those ford engines.
 
Maybe you can just cover up the coils or put shop rags or something in the area where the water would collect. I would say aluminum foil but being that the coils & that area in particular is electrical not sure if anything would happen even thought the engine is off. Once you wash it you can use a leaf blower or compressed air to blow the excess water out. Just an idea.

That's what he was talking about I really think that I'm going to pass on the motor for the most part...I can clean it up OK with out allot of water and then spray off with some water based dressing and let it go at that.....I have allot of work to get done on this truck other than the motor....thanks
 
the key is fast powerwashing......powerwashing uses more pressure and less water than a hose, a hose will saturate the engine and your fuked.....i will take about 2 minutes pressure wash engine remove most of the dirt, spray with a apc, let it set for about 5 to 10 minutes, quickly pw off and iam done
FAST FAST FAST dont stream water into the engine bay.......going slow will waste time and fuk up the engine

so what would be a good solution for beemer to do the work without damaging the vehicle?
