Following up 3M SMR...

About a month ago I washed, clayed, 3M SMR, #7, #26. Well at the time I thought everything came out nice because I was not in the right light to tell if there was any marring left.

Well about every week-2 weeks, I will put another coat of #26 on, and it is really looking good. Well today I was in my buddies shop and under his lights I saw a lot of little scratches everywhere that really bothered me. It wasnt so much swirl marks, but little scratches that went up and down and left to right.

Now am I correct to say that 3M SMR was highly abrasive and I needed to use another less abrasive polish after the 3M?

Keep in mind, I am not using a PC and honestly I would love one, but dont really see the absolute need for one right now.

If I am correct on my assumption then what kind of product can I buy locally (dont feel like having to wait to do this) that would help cover up those scratches? Ive read up on Megs #80? Would that be suffice or is there something better?

Also if I need another polish do you guys suggest that I just wash, polish, and wax my car in that order again?

Thank you guys!!

from what i have learned, 80 is more abrasive than than 3m smr and you shoudnl't need to follow 3m smr with anything. so maybe try 80 followed with some 3m smr then an LSP. make sure to use microfiber towels to prevent marring.

Yeah SMR is super mild, so no follow up is needed. Proabably too mild for some of those scratches. #80 sounds like a good step upwards and should also be good to follow staright with wax of choice.

Hmm SMR is mild? How would I go about getting rid of the scratches then. You have to get at the right angle and light to see all the little scratches.

I have always used MF towels, so that shouldnt be the problem (and they are not the cheap ones).

What kind of off the shelf product could I get that would get rid of them? I also dont think #80 is sold around here.

Sometimes it can be difficult to achieve the results you want if you limit yourself to off-the-shelf products. Iâ€â„¢d suggest you try either 3M PI III MG (machine glaze) pn# 05937 or Megâ€â„¢s #80.

Not sure where youâ€â„¢re located but the following links will help you find a dealer in your area. If a dealer doesnâ€â„¢t carry what youâ€â„¢re looking for they can usually order it from their supplier. The place where I buy a lot of products only had #80 in a gallon size, but were able to get me a quart the next day.

Here's a link on the Meg's site that will locate a store in your area, just check the box for Meguiar's Professional Products or you'll wind up with all the Wal-Marts, etc....
