Flex Owner"s

I have a makita and a pc. I've broken so many bp on the pc, I'm thinking of going to a flex. My cars are all in great shape and only needs to be spot buffed periodically. Haven't touched my makita in over a year. Since the flex has been out for sometime, is anyone having any problems? I know that you need to lube the felt ring and tighten the bolt, anything else?

Bought mine a year ago. Got the replacement BP a few months later even though I had no problems with the original. Over 100 hours logged, never a problem. Also picked up the EDGE adapter but have yet to try it. One sweet machine IMHO.

The first time I had a problem was with the bearing not being lubed and the machine getting super hot, after i had that fixed it was getting hot again (probably after 5-6 months) so now it's at a shop here in Houston getting. The part they need is on back order and they have had my flex for 5 weeks now. Other than that I haven't had problems with it, 3401 is a great polisher.

I have had mine since 12/07 I have not had one issue with it , I use it with the edge adapter .It performs flawlessly

pick up a spare backing plate and just like anything else, it may/will eventually wear out. better safe than sorry (especially if you are in a middle of a detail)...

No problems with mine either, though I did pick up a spare backing plate just in case (haven't got around to using my Edge adaptor for it yet).

The metal housing does get *hot* some times, but no...no problems.

Thank you for the replies. Except for one minor problem with repair it seems unaimous among all of you that the flex is a good machine. I'll take BigAl and Accumulator suggestion on getting a spare bp. Are the gears plastic?

I know the flex has more power, but how much of a difference will I notice over the PC?

For practical purposes, it can be the difference between being able to do a job and throwing up your hands in frustration.

As a novice PC owner, can someone explain why all the instructional videos (autogeek) never have the PC going past speed 5.5? Assuming the flex goes much faster, can it be used on max power, and will it provide better results, or just quicker results?

Whenever I use my PC at full speed I feel like I'm breaking a rule, or being impatient...

Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know of this felt ring that i need to lube? or any pics of it?

There are some threads worth SEARCHing for as they explain all this stuff with great pics. In short, it's under the bacing plate; remove that and it'll be obvious.

Vendors probably err on the side of caution and show "less than full-on" use of the tool as a CYA tactic. Note that there's no real speed "5.5", at least on mine; it jumps right from 5 to 6 even though the dial can be positioned between those numbers. Eh...maybe they changed that since mine were built :nixweiss

Anyhow, I used speed 6 with larger pads, but with 4" ones (all I now use for correction via PC) speeds 4.5 and 5 work just as well and seemed easier on the pads/velcro/etc. Some very aggressive pad/product combos even work fine at speed 4.

The Flex is more effective not really because of a speed difference, but rather because its rotation is motor-driven as opposed to free-wheeling. I use my Flex on top speed most of the time.
