I know that this product comparison has been discussed many times before. But I am comtemplating the Flex 3403 due to the recent offer from DetailersDomain.com

As a newbie, never used a rotary to date, only a UDM, items I like of the Flex over the Makita. The Flex looks slightly smaller and weighs less than the Makita, but has at least the same amount of power. Although I have read that the Makita is one of the most reliable units out there. The failures of the Flex do scare me. So.... as the weekend, casual detailer, the Flex can be had for about $190 whereas the Makita about $20 less, both shipped. Why do I want to consider a rotary? IMO it takes too long to work with the UDM to make noticeable correction.

I have a majority of CCS 5" pads that I use on the UDM that I would also like to use with the rotary.... Thoughts please.

I've used both. There are pros and cons for each.

3403

Pros: light weight

Cons: slowest speed is 1100, noisy over 1.2k rpm, gets really hot, can't use large pads, possible reliability problems

9227

Pros: quiet, very reliable, you can use whatever pads you want, speed adjustable down to slow rpms.

Cons: heavy

I bought a 3403 last spring and have been happy with it except for the noise and that it does get very hot while using. Some people have had them thermal trip from getting too hot, but mine hasn't done it yet.

I think Holden_C04 had an almost new 3403 burn up on him a couple months ago.
