FK425 - What`s in it

Just wrapping up my supply purge/cleanout.

Took a spray bottle of FK425 and dumped it...
Noticed one spot has some settled ~pink/clearish goop~ the size of a small sap drop that remained inside the bottle.
Now this is where it`s get semi interesting

- Brand New Clean Bottle filled with 425
Probably has been filled maybe 5-7 years ago ??
When looking at the bottle prior to dumping, it just looked like regular FK42K Pink liquid...

After emptying it, aside from the small goop described on the top of the bottle, there is blackish residue on the bottom of the bottle....Not worth repurposing.

I was planning just to do a APC dilution soak and repurpose it for Perl

Me wonders how much crap is on some of our product bottles but the dye/color doesn`t show it.

------------

Quick update. Cleaning up the sprayer head, the orifice of the sprayer head , as well as when removed, where the liquid come up, it had pinkish product that was not liquid by byproduct dried up...

Curiosity intrigued me so I took a long q-tip sway and scrubbed the tarish spot out.
It`s consistency feels like gelatin`ish. I suppose some form of liquid wax ?

I suppose the goop on the bottom is this byproduct and dye, which maybe over time (long term), settled and turned this color. It`s kinda like black sludge/water mold when you have water sitting stagnent in the bottom of something.

Interesting enough, I emptied out 1 brand new FK425. Same lifetime of ownership. Emptied it out in 2 bottles to give to F&F.....and the brand new bottle I emptied, did not show this goop. It`s not like the brand new bottles are vac/air sealed. Just a simple sealing cap.

mobiledynamics- Huh, that`s a weird one! Maybe Ron K. (who does lurk here occasionally) will see this and email somebody he stays in touch with.

What surprises me is that the [whatever it is] has never showed up in any of mine. I sometimes let it sit around for years and years (not just a few) but I`ve never had that happen.

You could always call FK- the number I used last time (dunno if it`s still good) was (626) 443-8983. I spoke with a woman named Leda who was nice and helpful.

Had that happen to me also. It`s a pinkish or whitish goop. Doesn`t effect the usability of FK 425. But will clog the pickup for the sprayer:angry:.

Seems to come from long periods of sitting around. Bought a case 4/1Gal bottles. I use a mesh strainer to filter the Goop out before I refill spray bottle.

Marine Clerk- Now I`m gonna be all paranoid about mine too!

Swanicyouth- Those would`ve been my guesses too, though "flocculation" slipped from my active vocabulary quite a while ago :o

Accumulator-I think the Heat seems to cause the problem. Had some Hot days here in Huntington Beach(Believe it or not) over 100.

After that is when the problem showed up. Down to 1.5 Gal . Will be following your lead on IUDJ in the future.

Expect a PM from me about tips and tricksB)

Marine Clerk- Always open to PMs :D Even if I don`t always get back promptly :o

Heat can indeed kill some QDs...I had M34 go bad in my previous shop. The current one doesn`t get that hot as the AC would kick in by that point.

Accumulator-We aren`t supposed to need AC here at The Beach:mellow:. Had problems with the Black ring at the top of an unopened one also.

Think the whole thing is fungus related.

I`ll take you up on that.

Heck I`ve been a member for a long time and look at how many posts I have:huh:

This stuff that`s being described, I would not even had seen it , unless I emptied the bottle as I did. If one was to just look at it pre emptying....it would just be a bottle of pink FK425....

But as a data point, the gallon jug I emptied as well (same vintage), none of this black goop...I suppose there is minimal air space between inside the new jug...

Maybe it`s the extra volume of air, etc that caused it.

Since I`ve been using coatings, and coating sealants as toppers, etc - and also seeing how A certain product will evaporate/flash off in a bottle if I don`t use it for awhile, I`ve made it a point in the last 2 years that if I believe a product will sit unused for anything longer than 6 weeks, I will make sure I turn the nozzle tight when I`m done - theoretically capping off the point of entry where air mitigates.

As I write this, there is a new topic I should start that I`ve been meaning to post for 2 months now since reading other stuff......Stay tuned.

mobiledynamics- Yikes, your conscientiousness with regard to tightening the nozzle down is so far beyond what I`d be willing to do....

Marine Clerk- That whole "black seal issue" thing would probably have me on the phone to FK. As for your post-count...some folks just aren`t as verbose as Yours Truly :o

I hear ya on the nozzle. I never used to do that and I have plenty of products that don`t evaporate by just sitting.
But there is 1 product in which at 22-23OZ, it evaporated down to 15oz or so....literally just by sitting.
What was left between the 22oz-15 oz of the bottle , was said ~flocculation~ of SIO2 stuff....
Anyhow, since that observation, I just figuered it would be best practices just to close up that nozzle

mobiledynamics- Well, good on you for being willing to do what`s called for. Gee, I`ve just never had something in a sprayer evap like that, at least not that I noticed/remember.

Marine Clerk- Now I`m gonna be all paranoid about mine too!

Swanicyouth- Those would`ve been my guesses too, though "flocculation" slipped from my active vocabulary quite a while ago :o

I`ll have to check mine and see how it is. Mine is pretty old too - maybe 5 years.

Flocculation lolz. Pharmaceutical chemistry 101.

Had a female professor for pharmaceutics who was from Israel & like 88 years old with a thick accent. Every time she said "flocculation" or "floccs" you couldn`t here the "L" - giving us all a chuckle and a whole new meaning to the word.

SwanicYouth- Wonder how old my little sample bottles are, had `em since the days of "FK1" distributing the line.

Chemistry was one of those courses where I...uhm...did the "young and irresponsible" thing excessively enough to basically blur my way through :o Now had my Prof been the lady *you* had, well..that sure would`ve been different! I simply adore people like her and am always captivated by every word that proceedeth.

But yeah...heh heh heh...I would`ve been Full-on Beavis about her pronunciation of Flocculation ;)

Mine is still legit. No funkiness whatsoever to report.

Accumulator- The white/pink goop showed up when I refilled my spray bottle from the gallon container. Didn`t notice til I had a clog.

Was scratching my head until I decided to use the strainer. Seems to work fine but have relegated to spraying on the rims and moistening polishing pads to get longer work time with FG400.

Strain every time I transfer now. I usually don`t holler too much. Thought it might be due to the amount of years I`ve had the FK425 and the potential for just degrading. :hmmm:

MarineClerk- I have to shake *shake* *SHAKE* some of my other older QDs, but that always works OK. Famous last words, we`ll see if I`ve jinxed myself.
