First use of Poorboy's EX

JimS

Adopt a shelter pet!
I got my order of Poorboys EX yesterday and couldn't wait to try it so at 9 pm last night I went out to the garage and put a coat of EX on the tonneau cover and the hood over the 5 coats of Zaino I have on it. It's still hard for me to believe that the Zaino could possibly be improved on but this Poorboy EX is something else! The hood and the tonneau are markedly more shiny!

I still have some paint work to get done this weekend, dirt in the clearcoat on both the hood and the tonneau, so I'll get that sanded and then I think I'll try using the Poorboy Pro polish to take out the sanding marks, then polish the whole truck with Poorboy Pro, which will remove the Zaino and then do a couple coats of EX.

I really, REALLY like the Poorboy Spray and Wipe and now the EX. Based on this experience there's no reason to think I won't like the Pro polish.

I'm just too inexperienced and unknowledgeable to be able to accurately describe the difference I'm seeing with the addition of the EX but I sure llike it!!

Regards, JimS

Come on Ed, pixs do not really show the subtle differences in appearance between protectants. Obviously, Jim denotes a personal appearance enhancement with Poorboy's EX that meets his approval. Beyond that pictures and descriptions are just gravy for us. :wavey

Glad you like it. I am currently in the same process of doing a complete detail of my silver c70. I am going to actually try using AIO as the base and top it with EX. The first time I tried it (when I recieived the sample) I applied EX directly over my exsisting layers of AIO, 4xsg (after cleaning the surface with poorboy s&w;) ). It was great!! I like the deep carauba look.

Continuing the saga that I wrote to being this thread....I got the dirt out of the hood and tonneau this weekend using my new Makita 9227 rotary for the first time and it went very well. I really like using the rotary and it's great to be able to fix problems that I had no hope of fixing in the past.

After using 3m Fine Cut rubbing compound, 3m Machine Polish and finally 3m SMR Glaze the truck was ready for the application of poorboys Pro Polish followed by Poorboys EX.

I started by using a California Duster to get the dust off and then the Poorboy Spray and Wipe to clean the truck. Then I used my PC to apply the Pro polish with the yellow Mequires foam pad. The Polish was not as thick as I'd thought it would be....based on the extremely thick EX, so in the beginning I had a little problem using too much product . This was also the first time I've ever used the new PC to apply a product and I found that for me it's much better to apply the product to the pad rather than to the paint. I always used too much when I applied the Pro polish to the paint.

The Pro polish went on very smoothly and evenly and wiped off very easily, even those areas where I'd used too much polish. I used a 24x24 pacshak mf to remove the polish.

I also used the PC, with a Meguiars White Finishing pad, to apply the EX and I like using the PC better than applying it by hand. I found that it was easier to evenly spread the very thick EX with the PC than it was by hand. I used another pakshak 24x24 mf to remove the EX and it was incredibly easy to remove. Not even a hint of rubbing, just a light wipe took it off. There was no dust or at least so little that it was negligible.

About 1/3 of the back half of the truck sat in the direct sun the entire time I worked on it. I applied the Pro Polish and the EX in the sun and I left the polish and the EX on that portion of the truck for about 1 hour each, baking in the sun and it made no difference in ease of removal. I put a second coat of EX on the truck using a swatch of 100% cotton Fieldcrest towel that measured about 6x6". It went on well but I still find the thick EX hard to apply evenly by hand. Maybe I just don't know the proper technique.

The end product was nothing less than fantastic. Even my wife noticed the difference and she NEVER pays any attention to the detailing I'm doing. She stopped by the garage just as I was finishing up and started to ask me about some project she had going in her garden and as she was talking she became aware of the truck, stopped what she was saying and exclaimed loudly "Holy sh%$!!!" What did you do to make it shine like that?!!"

I know that Zaino is supposed to be the best for white paint but this truck shines much more brightly with the Poorboy Pro polish layered with 2 coats of Poorboy EX than it did with the 5 coats of Zaino I had on it. The differnce is immediately noticeable and truly remarkable. Maybe unbelieveable. I did not expect any improvement over Zaino but this is a big improvement. I am extremely pleased with this Poorboy stuff. Very, very easy to use and fantastic results. Nothing short of fantastic.

Sorry I don't have pictures.....that's why I've posted asking for info on digital cameras. I want to post pics of what the Poorboys stuff has done for me. Regards, JimS

Great review JimS!!

I am also applying EX by hand (I have no pc) and would appreciate any tips to use less?waste less of the product. I LIKE this wax that gives a deep wet carauba look and yet with a sealant durability.

Thanks Jim...

to quickly give you and Ash the answer...use a damp mf cloth or sponge preferably for thinner and more even coats....yes a rotory or pc can really spread it out...

This is not an attempt to hijack your thread, but as a follow up to your procedure. Specifically, the use of Poorboy's Professional Polish. What was your experience with removing the sanding marks? How about aggessiveness? How much gloss did it add? You stated it was it easy to apply with a PC, and removal was easy with a MF. Did you experience much dusting in the areas your application was too thick?

Steve, chime in if you wish.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Excellent review Jim :bow

You gotta love Poorboy's EX. Definitely the sealant answer for carnuaba depth and richness, gloss and ease of use. :xyxthumbs

I'm really intrigued by everything people have had to say about EX, and I'm sure I'd like to try some. But I have still not heard any definite claims about it's durability. It seems like some people have usually either put it on over something, or topped it with something else, which doesn't make for accurate durabilty claims.

I realize that most people here, including myself, will just re-apply this stuff over and over again anyways, making the durability question moot. But I'm concerned about using it on friends, family, and customers cars. Does anyone have a clear idea of how long this stuff will really last?

Anyways, good review, JimS!

The EX is a quite new product so durability has not been tested as far as I know. Perhaps Steve can answer this.

I used 3M Fine Cut rubbing compound, Machine Polish and Swirl Mark Remover prior to the Pro Polish so the degree to which the Pro polish diminishes the sanding scratches is unknown.

The Pro polish increased the brightness of the finish significantly and left no dusting, or almost none.

I'm sorry that I was not more scientific is noting whether the Pro polish was in any way aggressive in the removal of sanding marks and other issues you and others have asked. I'm still so new to all this that I don't yet know what to look for while I'm doing the work. But....I am learning that when I post I'd better be ready to answer some questions! Regards, JimS

No cause for regret. I think you did a fine job in documenting your procedure and results, including third party testimony (your wife :)). Good job :up

To start:

Steve thanks for your reply to our initial question:up I needed that for this weekend BIG detailing;) .

Second:

JimS, no regrets. I too appreciate your review, especially on the pro polish. I might try that next time (to many currently in stock).

Third:

Mr. Clean, I understand your question (initially, durability is always the answer that comes later than sooner as most of us keep topping any product we like :o). I may be wrong, but from the bottle that Steve sent me, it says on the back that the EX should last several months (I have no reason to doubt this as Steve seems to do extensive tests on his product, and is a stand up guy). With all that said, this is a new product that we are all still experimenting with.

As a side note, I did do a portion of my hood when I received the sample. I did not do a real detail (ie prep) but the EX did last a month (with all the rain ect) before I decided to top it with another coat and s100/ps21 (to see how that looked:up).

Thank you. Actually my questions were in reference to the PB Pro Polish product. Specifically when used as a step in the system with EX. I have seen several positive reviews of the newer EX product, and have definitely decided to place it on my short list to try.

Your comments regarding Steve and his products are right on target with my experience. I will likely contact him directly for a comment. I thought he might chime in again on this thread, but he is probably very busy with family and business commitments.
