First time with hitachi and excel pads

Tried out the new hitachi rotary on my white 91 acura legend. I bought this car back in oct and never had a chance to polish it. The previous owner had it repainted back in 97. It had a good amount of swirls. GTScott was giving me a hand.

Start with a yellow excel pad, the 6" BP and some menzerna PG. I think I was in the 1100-1200 rage just trying to get comfortable on the hood. I worked the PG for a little while, checking the heat every once in a while. Was not getting much heat or reduction in the swirls. So after 3 passes, Scott suggested that I move up to the orange pad and dial up the speed to approx 1500. After working the PG a little while longer it was starting to built up some heat on the surface (warm). Back the car out into the sun and was finally starting to see some results. Did the hood, roof and trunk. It still took about 2 passes and I would say we got about 75% of the swirls out. We where using some light stands in the garage later in the evening. Time was running out so Scott used the PC with FPII top go over the entire car and I applied a single coat of Werkstatts CJ.

I will continue to work on this car over the next few weeks.

Should I try a wool pad or something else with a little more cut? Still seemed like a slow process, but I'm sure I could not get these results from a PC.

Got some buffer hopping and that seemed to be from the pad getting loaded up from too much PG. Changing out the pads often seemed to help this. I did not feel that I was using too much PG, but working with white its hard to tell. The slinging did not seem that bad. I did have alot of dust.

On the lower panels it seemed hard to control the rotary.

Thanks for any tips! :up

I wouldn't go any more aggressive than a Medium cut pad with a rotary. Maybe a stronger compound???

I think the orange propel is considered a "heavy" cut pad.

As far as I could see no micro-marring or buffer trails.

Not being a pro I guess that I do not know any product stronger than Menzerna PG.

I guess that I would do it over again. Do the same thing but with slower passes. I am not able to get what needs to be done with just two passes. I am wondering if the product had been worked completely. I have found when using Menzerna PG that there is a haze that needs to be removed with another polish like FPll when worked long enough to get the job done.

Thanks!!! Will polish for a longer time when I get to continue.

First, you prolly won't see buffer swirls on a white car except in the bright sunliight.

If you are only getting 75%, then you might want to increase

a) speed,

b) pad 'strength' or,

c)a more aggressive polish.

But, what many of us overlook, maybe just a few more passes with your current combination (more polish) will do the job. I *frequently* find this to be the case in my shop...

Thanks Jim!!

I was working on the rear plastic bumper cover today.

Here is a pic before I started:

After 3 passes @ 1500 with PG and orange excel pad:

These are pretty "minor" swirls IMO, so its still taking me a while to get them out.

I have a wool/poly pad Should I try and use it? :scared: Or is there something inbetween the foam pad I am using now and that.

What about this foam waffle pad?

TIA!

I beg to differ!!!! ;) Just takes a little more time and some patience.

I agree with Jim. Keep your speed at 1500, slow your pass speed down and make multiple passes with your current product/pad combo. The rotary is a great tool but will not remove everything in one pass.

Thanks Mike! I guess I need to look on the bright side and that is nothing is getting messed up. :nixweiss

WS6 - I don't agree with you at all. No reason, I just feel that today is a good day to not agree with you. Sometime I need to lure you over with offers of free beer to critique our process.

I was surprised at how slowly the process went. I assumed the rotary would be the magical swirl eraser and it was not. Still, a great tool I am glad to have in the arsenal.
