First Scratch!

My son accidentally put a scratch on the rear fender of my WRX wagon. It's not a deep scratch, more like a surface scratch, but looks like some of the paint has been removed. What can I do to make this go away? Help! :nixweiss

....there are hundreds of posts on this topic, including ones with pictures. And look through some of the questions in Autopia University, most newbie's are these same questions over and over. But welcome!!!

I can tell you what you SHOULD do for the scratch...NOTHING!

My daughter decided to adorn my new, black Acura CL Type S after I had it for 60 days with her bike handlebars. Huge scratch to the paint down to the primer. I took it to the dealer and they wanted $300 to have the entire panel re-sprayed. I actually considered it until I saw my hood get pelted by every 18-wheeler on the planet.

It was at that point that I realized that it was a CAR, and I'll do the best I can to keep it looking good, but I'm not going to go nuts because it'll just get banged up all over again.

If you have kids...you'll get more scratches!!!!:nixweiss

I sort of agree with the Green Hornet. I'd say to fix it up as best you can, then not worry about it. More are on the way, and there's more to life than scratch worries....

On the other hand, if you're completely anal like most of us, then I'd suggest either someone who does air brushing touchups, or a complete panel repaint. Repainting can be tricky and leave you less satisfied though if the shop is anything less than 100% perfect (rare). Inspect carefully under florescent lighting (at the shop, with them) when it's complete.

Read davidB's touch-up article on the forum. It tells you a good technique to fill in that type of scratch. If its just in the clearcoat you can just touch the clear up and it can be made to look decent. :up

yeah, its "just a car", but there are always things you can do to improve upon it and protect it. :up
