Hello All. First post…
Apologies if I’m in wrong section…but I think it fits. Any help is much appreciated…

I’ve ALWAYS had new cars, and always kept them PERFECTLY detailed. But, financial circumstances have required I keep a used car for a while.

I purchased a silver Honda Civic. When I bought it, the lot must have used a very good detailer, as I couldn’t see any paint imperfections. As I’ve washed it, it appears that there are 1,000’s of places on the paint, where the paint is off. They’re not dents, just small (not quite pinhole, but a little bigger) area’s all OVER the car, that have the paint removed.

In case I decide to sell this or keep it until I can afford to have it re-sprayed…what would be your recommendation for the best polish and/or wax to HIDE these chips? It freaking hurts everytime I see the vehicle.

A top surface respray from a good painter (recommended) is $750. I’m saving.
But, in the meantime???

Any help?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the site to start...The first thing that comes to mind is that they used a filler wax to fill in the imperfections and over a short period of time you washed that out of the finish....the part about the paint washing off I don't quite understand...are you saying there are lots of rock chip holes that where not apparent to start?
This goes back to a filler product that is designed to cover up imperfections in paint...with some detailers this is a common practice and cheapens what the good detailers are doing...I would encourage you take some pics and post, this way we can all see what you are talking about....

Thanks! (For the welcome...)
Yes, I could get a picture tonight of a sample.
Wouldn't be a problem...

Honestly, its not just road rash...its on the hood, top of the car, and the top of the trunk. It doesn't look like hail damage, b/c there's no dents. Maybe it was repainted and its a lousy paint job... There were no accidents on the Carfax, and its a 2002, so I didn't even think of it having been repainted...

Beemerboy,
thanks, I'll post one tonight...
I think you're probably right, that it was some filler product. (like the chipstik that turtle wax used to make).

I've thought of touch up paint, but there's so many of them, I think it would look pretty bad. (like it could get much worse!)

This is some cases is sounding like clear coat failure or a crappy repaint touch up job...the pics will clear it up I'm sure

Ok, did that work? I've never put an image on photobucket.

If it did, does this help?
Its my hood...obviously.
Did I get "taken" and bought a car with a crappy
aftermarket paintjob?

OK... welcome to the site first of all :). Can you tell if this is on top of the paint or is it in the paint? It almost looks like some type of fallout that you can use clay to remove. It is hard to tell though. If it is actually in the paint ... it looks like there was some bonding issues with the primer, base or clear coat. On the lower right of the hood, is that tree sap or another defect with the paint?

budman3, yeah, its kind of hard to tell from the picture...it's definitely not something on the paint..its where the clearcoat and paint are down to the primer. (My Nikon is smarter than me...it wouldn't let me take the picture any closer...)
The lower right is a bigger "chip" where someone touched it up with paint. That one I saw when I bought it, the others have since shown up.

And thanks for the welcome!

I'm wondering if they shot new clear over the old paint because you have said that its only on the top parts....they may have had some clear coat failure and decided to fix the tops with some new clear...you can see in the pic that he has sheen....looks to me like the clear separated from lack of a good prep....take this car to a good body shop and let an expert give his opinion...some wet sanding might be a remedy but that's really hard to tell from this pic

Anybody have a suggestion on how to hide them?
:)

A real good filler wax will hide allot but what you have there looks to big for that....

A good detailer that knows how to wet sand can improve that if its surface related...what state are you in?

Hi JD, Welcome.

I'm curious as to what he used as well, it is rather rough to tell from the pix if its fallout, rock chips or a bad paint job.
It almost looks like something got on the paint whle still tacky and then came off.
Is the whole car like that?

Wet Sanding? Could you explain this to me?
Sorry, not understanding...

Wet sanding is not for a beginner but to explain...you take very fine sand paper with a spray bottle of water...wet the area and very gently you sand areas down that have issues...mostly its for fine surface scratches or uneven finishes...Then it requires a rotary buffer to get the finish smooth again.

Lets see if there are any members on here that are in your area.. that can have a hands on look for you....

I think SilverLexus is from Alpharetta ... haven't heard from him in a while though. There are other members in your area as well.

Yes, I'd love for someone with experience to look at it...
How do you tell where someone is from on the Member's List?
Besides going into each and every member...

thanks again for all the replies so far...

I have seen something similar to this before as just like Beemerboy said. I had a silver A6 and they repainted the bumper, well I noticed the clear had tiny little air bubbles which all popped and left little divits in the paint...everywhere.

Sorry to say that not wet sanding, another shot of clear nor any product will fix that problem. The paint or surface was contaminated before(or during) spraying and has come through. The finish needs to be sanded back down to the metal and resprayed:sorry:
