First Black Car - Snow Scrathes

Hey all -

So how bad is ice/snow/salt on black cars . First black car......it was mint before the little snowstorm that hit the NorthEast last week.

Well, I got a chance to clean her up yesterday and there are visible linear scratches all over (hood, door panels, etc). Man, it's going to be a chore just getting it mint when spring hits. Is this going to have to a yearly battle ;)

It's hard enough with the pollen in the spring and the daily upkeep when it's warm cause it's black already...............what did I get myself into.

chefwong- Heh heh, that's why I, who once said I'd only own black cars, now have SILVER ones ;) Yep, you really have your work cut out for you using a black car in the winter.

Only advice I can give is to keep it VERY WELL protected with multiple coats of some "sacrificial layer", such as many layers of Klasse SG, maybe topped with Collinite wax. Choose products that are known to be "self cleaning", such as the Collinite, dirt just doesn't like to stick to it.

Wash VERY frequently so you're never trying to remove too much nasty stuff at any one time- you'll find that the dirt will wash off VERY easily up to the point that the vehicle is TOO dirty (layers of dirt), then it's a big job. Wash VERY carefully since you might have bits of sand and other abrasives stuck to your vehicle.

I was confused as to whether you were saying that the scratching was created BY the snow, or by the process of washing the vehicle AFTERWARDS...

My guess is the scratches were created by washing techniques. Did you flush the car well with water beforehand?

I have had many black cars over the winters and it is hard but you can survive. I wash mine min. weekly at the local spray wash and use my own wash pail/soap/mitt. 1st water $ is rinse to get every possible bit of crud off. Then I wash with mitt. 2nd $ is to rinse. then I dry with MF. Wash often .. you will appreciate it in the spring.

~One man’s opinion~

It does sound like your washing/drying technique that’s causing the scratches (falling snow is soft, ice storms and hailstones however…)

The only other question I’d have is “How/what are you removing the snow and ice with?

Experience unshared; is knowledge wasted…/

I've been looking all over for a coin-op spray wash. I wish I had a garage.

There's not enough time in the morning for a wash during the weekdays and on the evenings are way too dark. For the past 2 Weekends in a row it's snowed :(

I use a double wash mitt when washing. My towels are clean. I wasn't expecting to use them before I put them in storage ( JT MF and WW towels). They were washed / rinsed thoroughly. In terms of snow removal, I don't brush off all the snow. Hell, I don't even touch the body when removing snow. Only the hood/roof I remove as much as I can but leave a little layer on the top letting the heat take care of it.

Dying to polish the car but it's wayyyy too cold. Might have to take the car out to the buddys house 1.5 hr drive away on the weekend - he's got a garage ..........
