Finishing step..

Hey guys, I feel I have almost figured out how to achieve about 85-90 percent correction.

I'am in a body shop, so i feel this is acceptable.

After paint, we sand with 2k grit..

Polished with Meguiars maroon wool- 3M ultra cut (to really knock out those sand marks)

Meguairs Maroon Wool- Megs105 then..

Orange LC Foam- Megs105.. Now, after these 3 steps I'am left with minor micro-marring. But i also noticed i can see holograms in the direction of my buffer.

What do you guys feel should be the last step? I also have 3M UF as well as White LC Foam, and a Green LC foam.

Is another polish necessary? Could the 3M UF be used at all for any kind of cut, depending on the pad i use? I feel like the UF with a certain pad just might do the trick..?

Thanks everyone!

You need to go to a lighter cut than 105 to remove the holograms. I'd try M205 on a white pad. I've never used the 3M UF so I can't comment on that, but if it's a light cut like the 205 it should work.

You're using a rotary now right? Have you considered using MF pads on a DA? They cut about as fast as the wool but finish more like foam so I bet you could knock your process down to 2 steps instead of 3-4 and finish like glass. No worries about holograms or buffer trails either using a DA.

I might have some m205 left.. I threw a bunch of it away. It really ticked me off one day after i finished a car and put it out in the sun for a little.. Everything died back and looked like garbage. I have considered using IPA wipedowns, but decided not to. I don't want to put anything on our fresh clear that could in anyway jeopardize our work.. Hence me cutting out m205 from our operations.

You think that m205 with a white pad will still provide some cut? I'll give it a shot.

Yea, i'm on a rotary. I will have to look into that DA stuff, my dad is kind of old school.. which is why i never really tried it. lol

It should provide enough cut to remove holograms. If not with a white pad, maybe try an orange if the white isn't enough.

Yeah the 205 does have quite a bit of oil in it. Maybe look for something with a similar cut to 205 but doesn't have oils in it.

Once you learn to use a DA to correct, you will never want to touch a rotary again. the New school stuff that's out now is so much easier to work with once you learn it and the results are so much better.

I feel like we've been here before.... :nana:

I still feel your best bet is to start by finishing with a 3000 grit or higher sand paper. This way you eliminate the need to use the 3M heavy cut compound and won't be left with the deep and nasty holograms. On top of that, I also feel the best way to take out rotary holograms after the initial cutting is with the use of M105 and a foam cutting pad on a DA. I know you don't want to use a DA but it's easiest and most effective way to ensure you are remove 100% of the holograms. After that 2nd step, clearing up the light DA haze should be easy and with proper technique you shouldn't have to worry about putting in new holograms.

My old man is about as old school as it comes, but he is always open to new an improved products and techniques. If you show him it can save time, money, and produce better results, he should be willing to change.

Here is a good thread by Mike P that shows just how much of a difference using higher grit sanding paper makes.

I'd highly recommend investing in a dynabrade head for you rotary. It'll help you out a lot in the hologram department.

Is the new HD Polish body shop safe? If so, its absolutely amazing. I'd try that.
