Finish First and Liquid Glass

Sun Blinded Detailer
I was reading the archives and there was a reply quoted from customer service for LG which inferred that the chemical formula for both FF and LG had the same properties. My question is are they the same product under different labels ? I started out detailing my cars, but have become an obsessed collector of products, old and new, it seems. I have been looking at old posts and came across this information.... it just aroused my curiousity. I have about a dozen different products, and my family and friends lined up to be test subjects. I will say that so far all the products make a car look worlds better than before they were applied. I have found that prep is indeed the key, and proper prep makes turtle wax look like an expensive product.... no I dont advocate using less than the best... just trying to find the best (such a subjective effort!) leads me to better and better products .... This forum is a great resource for finding anything related to detailing.

If anyone knows anything about the makeup of these two products I would be interested just for my general knowledge ;)

I suspect too myself now that you mention the 2 products are similar. They both have cleaners, both come in a tin can. From reading reviews and research, seems LG takes the cake when it comes to a "wet look" shine. That said with the cleaner properties of both products, the drawback is you can't layer them, because if you apply the first coat, then decide to put on another coat regardless of time interval in between coats, the 2nd coat from the cleaners will strip the first coat. Therefore, just wasting product and time, IMO. I've never tried either or products so I can't give you an accurate opinon. About the only thing you will achieve is a slicker and glossier paint surface from continuing coats.

I agree as far prep goes. The philosophy around here seems 90% prep, 10% product. The proper claying, compounding if necessary and polishing can make a generic OTC wax look great. Hope this helps out,,,,,,AR

Well I cant tell you what the makeup was for the LG and FF but I do still have full cans of both the LG and FF. For the time period that these polishes were out I thought they were pretty good for their shine and durability. It has been a long time since I used them probably late 80's or early 90's. I probably could break out both cans and do a side by side test now but it would not mean anything because I dont think you can get either one anymore. But I might be wrong. the one thing that I am sure of is that on the back of the can they had the same Wilmington, Delaware address and one of them I think the LG had a label over it. this just tells me that both of them were made by Dupont or a division of Dupont. I have many of the old products that were made in the 70's and 80's still on my shelf. some examples would be the LG and FF, Auri, Malms, Blue Corral, Duragloss, Liquid Ebony, Vibrant paint sheild, Dupont #7 auto polish, Durashine and many more. I rarely ever threw out product over the years.

When I got home last night and looked at the polishes I realized that I was in error about the LG. I have used LG in the past and know that they are still making LG. the polish that I was thinking of and have 2 cans of is LIQUID CRYSTAL. It came out in 1991 about the same time FF came out. Its in the same size can as FF and LG. It is a synthetic polish like the Finish First and they both contain no wax. I have not used any of these 3 products in a long time and I not sure if the LG is a synthetic like these other 2. But I do remember that both these synthetic polishes were easy to use and provided some great shine and were durable too. sorry for the error.

Both seem to be Hi solvent abrasive systems......older technology similar to like nu finish, meguiar's #20. They are very similar right down to the packaging..........

We all know this is going on and it is called private labeling.......I don't have a problem with it as long as the prices are similar. when we pay 10-100% more for the same stuff the joke is on us..........

I used a product called Ultra Finish back in the late 80's that I swear is the same as LG, same can and all. For me back then it was a great product. Now I know better but it really made my car a standout and helped get me into the hobby. I saw someone selling it at a Flea Market last year and almost bought it on nostalgia, brings back good memories.

Thanks guys, I did find some LG in retail (Pep Boys) the packaging, and instructions are identical for FF and LG. I am not trying to dis either of these products, because FF did rid me of swirls and held up on my "test Bed" (Old,Old ,Old beater) vehicle for months . FF is the first polymer that excited me, but was just wondering if the two products are the same. They even share the same prep IMHO. Now I know a little more... but since Z, AIO, FMJ among others, I have moved on, but I am still fond of FF, kinda like my first date ;) Thanks again Guys !

Liquid Glass was the first sealant I used and although it leaved a glossy, even slick finish I learned the hard way what other have noted : at best it only cleans the paint and/or cosmetically enhances swirled paint (meaning there's no way getting around truly removing defects by polishing the paint first) and applying another coat will remove the previous.

For sure, offerings from Zaino, Klasse, Menzerna, etc are better for the extreme enthusiast's needs.

Man I have 1/2 a can of Liquid Crystal that I only use on my Harleys. I love the stuff but can not find it anywhere. I even tried to find it online and could not even find a link to the company.

I believe it was made by Plastone out of Chicago.

I sure wish I could find it again.

That sounds about right for the company that is listed on the back of the LC can. They were definitely out of Chicago, ILL.

I used the stuff for a few years but moved on to other products. For its time the LC was a very good product that provided a nice slick finish with a great shine. I have almost a full can and might have a 1/2 can sitting around too. When you are finished with your can of LC your welcome to have whats left of mine. just let me know when. I am sure that it is not produced anymore because I have not seen it around for many years.
