Finally gonna do it...

Ok, got the griots polisher, poorboys ssr 2.5, 1, blackhole, ex-p and nattys blue. Gonna wash and clay the wife's 2004 black Maxima. Paint is in sorry shape and never been detailed.
I've never detailed a car to this extent. Up to now I've hand applied and removed wax.
When using the ssr 2.5 and ssr 1, how long do you work on a section? Any tips for a total detailing nube?

I will take before and after pics.

Any help/advice you can give would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Les

Im sure there will be someone disagree and argue the entire process which is why Ive all but stopped giving advice like this, but work each section until you see the polish start to either disappear or flash dry. Buff it off with a clean microfiber towel, and inspect it. If its not to where you think it needs to be you can always hit it again. Poorboys is very user friendly and stays open for a long while (long working time). Which pads did you purchase with the polisher? I personally use a Griots and love it but its a powerful machine and pad choice is important with not only Poorboys stuff but any polish. Let us know which pads you have and one of us can walk you though it a little better.

Ok, this is what I have:
griots polisher
SSR 2.5
SSR 1
Black Hole
EX-P
Natty's Blue

With respect to pads I have:
Orange, White and Blue CCS pads.

Thanks,
Les

Use the orange or white with SSR 2.5
Ive found SSR 1 to work best with red pads but the blue would work. forget using it with white all together. its been said on this forum that white pads cause the SSR 1 to not cooperate. Softer pads are highly suggested for it.
Black Hole would work well with either the blue or a grey pad
EX-P and Nattys can be applied by hand or with a fine finishing pad like red or gold.
If your looking to do all of those steps you may need to order a few more pads. You can do it with what you have but your going to be washing pads often during the process and reusing them for different products.

Thanks for the advice. I did pick up two more of each of those pads. Gonna get a quickie breakfast and then get to it. Wash and clay. First time for the claying as well. Should be interesting. :rofl

You'll be fine. Just be patient and let the machine and products do their job. Dont try to rush through it either. These things take time. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Ok. So to recap today...first of all, I am dead tired!!! :D

So clayed my wife's 04 black Maxima today and at first I was a bit skeptical. I ran my hand over the just washed car and it didn't seem too bad, but then I did the old ziploc bag trick and the car felt like a lunar surface. I grabbed the clay bar and the sprayer and went to town. I couldn't believe how dirty the clay got.

So started with SSR 2.5 and orange pad then
SSR 1 and blue pad then Black Hole with blue pad, EX-P by hand and then Natty's blue by hand. Car looks pretty darn good.

Couple questions:
There were areas that I might have to get a bit more aggressive with. For example marks in the paint that couldn't be felt with fingernail, some didn't come out. Would that be SSR 2.5 with a different pad? Which pad?
Also, how do you guys deal with the dust especially after the polishing? The dust was all over the windows and crevices.
Finally, do you apply Black Hole like SSR, working it into the paint or what?

Here are a few pics.

Thanks for all the help (and future help) :yourrock,

Speaking of future help. Of course I took a new look at my 03 Anniversary Red Corvette Convertible today after I did my wife's car and noticed holographic effects in the paint. I guess the guy I bought it from must have gotten it detailed. There are hardly any swirls just very noticeable holographic effects.
How would I attack that?

I have SSR 2.5 and 1
Blackhole, EX-P and Natty's Blue...I also picked up some of the carnuba wax with Natty's blue in it (haven't used it yet)

I have orange, white and blue pads.

Thanks,
Les

Outstanding! Very nice job, especially for your first one. The spots you mentioned that you couldnt get out may be a candidate for a more aggressive approach. Im a firm believer in keeping a good compound around for difficult spots. Megs 105, Megs Ultimate Compound (which can be purchased over the counter at any auto parts store or Wally World), or 3M Rubbing Compound are all great. Used with an orange pad, compound will normally remove the stuff that 2.5 or any aggressive polish wont. Dusting is just something we deal with. SSR 2.5 dusts like crazy...just the nature of the beast. You can either wipe if off as you go along or plan to do another wash at the end. The first time you compound with a rotary and a wool pad you'll think polish dust is a breeze to clean up lol. As for your Black Hole question, yes..use it basically just like your other polishes.
Vette clear coat is hard as a rock. I think I would try the Black Hole first on it. Its not going to really remove the holograms but it will hide them really well. If that dont give you the results your looking for, go to the SSR 2.5/1 combo like you did today.
Again, great work. Im sure your exhausted :)

Those are great results from what I see. Mr Clean hit on some other great options. For what you've done so far you should be pretty proud. It takes some time to get the feel when working a defect area.
It sounds like a Griots 3in da is in your future for those tight spots:)
