few questions

I'm looking into making my first major detailing supplies purchase soon and ive got a question or two for y'all.

I've read about people raving about how great optimum polish is. My most major project that I plan on tackling is a 2004 volkswagen beetle that has been badly swirled with a rubbing compound (my dad thought it would be nice to do it for her for her birthday!). ive heard that optimum polish is great in the sense that its agressiveness changes with pad choice. I want to pick up the lake country variable contact black, white, and orange pads. Would it be possible to fix the swirls on the vw with these pads and optimum or will i have to get the LC yellow heavy cut pad and/or another more agressive polish (if so which?)

I just purchased a pc7336 from lowes yesterday, are there any break-in procedures I should know about?

When priming the lake country VC pads, how should i go about putting the polish/wax/etc onto the pad? most say a circle or an x... but these pads have that middle section sorta cut out of them. will an x still work or should i do something else?

optimum has an extremely long work time. Am i going to need all that time to get these swirl marks out (ive heard people polishing one area for 6-8 minutes straight!) or is a shorter time necessary. I know that i need to develop a "feel" for this but what kinda time are you guys averaging?

thanks for answering my questions, i appreciate it!

working 85 hours a week finally got to me and comming home from the restaurant that night i fell asleep and ran into a median and then the car rolled 4 times. Yes, my seatbelt is the only reason i'm still here. Regardless, i was screwed up there for a while, had part of my scalp taken off, and my eyes were hideously black and swollen, but im better now. my eyes are fine and 90% of the hair grew back. You really have to look to notice anything. My sig is actually out of date, I bought the Tc September 5th.

OMG Neothin - glad you made it out of that craziness okay . Seatbelts save lives !

oooooo - I just now looked at the last set of photos :scared:

REALLY good you are doing okay ! Time to have a talk with the boss about your hours right ?

please

well, i was actually working two jobs over the summer, days at a title insurance office and then nights at a restaurant. I figured i would rather work during the day and make money than stay at home and sleep till 2pm seeing as i had nothing else to do. now though, school started a while ago so now i only work at the restaurant. so the hours are now lots better :-D

but anyways, back on topic

The products you're buying should do the job. If you find there are stubborn swirls you might want to get some optimum compound or something even slightly more agrressive (SSR 2.5 or 3, Menzerna PG, etc...), but give the polish a go first, if you work it long enough it will take out quite a bit of swirling. I use the same pads and apply 3-4 little dabs (nickel sized, maybe?) on the pad right on the outside of that inner circle. How long you work the polish is really up to you, although if you don't work it long enough it can be oily when removing, in terms of an upper limit of time, it seems to work forever. Id start on a small section of the hood, maybe 1/3rd of it or so and work the product until you notice it starting to really clear up (probably 4-5 minutes). Wipe away, and if it's oily you know to go longer, if not see how the swirling is then go from there. If the area is heavily swirled it might take a couple passes, and in some cases you might need a more aggressive product/pad combo, but with that orange pad and OP you should take out most of your swirls. Click my sig link and scroll down to see the swirls I took out with OP. It did take some time, but it left an awesome finish.

Good luck.
