Before looking at the full sized after photos it is important to reflect with two full sized before photos.

There was heavy orange peel over the Ferrari's entire surface.

Here is an in progress shot taken of the 458 Italia prior to the end of day three. A lot of time was spent double and triple checking the progress and results. If there had been enough factory paint thickness to completely sand the body completely flat, this job would have been easier. As such the goal was to get as close to perfect as possible, which meant giving it a consistent and uniform finish everywhere. Over sanding and over flattening a small amount too much would have meant re-sanding the entire surface flatter as well to ensure total uniformity.

The remaining pictures are after shots, taken both in direct sunlight and in the shade close to the house. Thank you for reading.

I would also like to thank Kevin Brown for graciously taking the time to proof read this thread and for making many beneficial suggestions!

After Note:The picture of the mil gauge reading was borrowed from a previous write-up of mine but worked for the story line. Since I originally was writing this for my website, I used artistic freedom with that picture. All other pictures used on the write up and every description is 100% correct and was taken during the course of the write-up.

Sorry that the text is so small and can be hard to read. The post was originally formatted for 1200 pixels wide (and looks clear) but Autopia doesn't allow anything larger then 800 pix now?

I have linked my homepage on this forum to the write-up posted on my website that should be easier to read.

Orange peel is when the paint is kinda blurry? like the above photos? If so how can you tell if its orange peel or just the paint quality?

Do you have any close up, similarly high-rez after pictures of the top 2 fender shots in the last post?

Toymachine,

Orange peel is a bumpy texture in the paint that can start in any layer but culminates in a bumpy surface texture (like the peel of an orange or a basketball skin). Some would argue that excessive orange peel is bad paint quality.

Regarding the first picture on the top of page two, there is a good before and after of it (that is very easy to see in the full sized thread. Unfortunately it is hard to see on this version because of the pic size limit).

Here is the closest thing I have to an after pic of the second fender in high res. Again a lot of the detail in the pics is lost because of the size limit of this forum :(

Amazing work Todd, and probably one of the most well thought out, well written write-ups I've ever seen.

I can't figure out which I like better, the stunning results obtained by countless hours of refining the finish or similar time spent conveying every last detail of what went into this project.

One of the best writeups I have ever seen! Looks like I was reading a darn magazine article on how to sand a 458 Ferrari. Excellant work Todd!

Thank Todd. Looks great!
