Ferarri detail

Hey guys, I know it says i'm a newbie but i have been detailing for a few years, and have been perusing the boards for a few days. I decided to join because I realized I am now among fellow detailing junkies who all share the same passion.....detailing. My question is that I don't really do many high end cars....audis and Bimmers being as expensive as I go. A customer I have just purchased a 1984 Ferarri 308gtsi quattro valve. I was wondering, are there any special products I need to use on his car? The paint is all original, and in relatively good condition. It's was out in California until last summer when he had it shipped to Rochester New York. He wants the car detailed to get that incredible shine back. It's a charcoal grey color. Let me know of your suggestions.

Thanks....

hey max, i detail the Ferrari Club of New Orleans annual concours event every year. the 308 is actually pretty simple - treat it like it's yours. it's the best advice i ever got from one of the ferrari owners. you'll have to watch out for all the vents on the car. the back vents/grills on the rear lid covering the engine bay are a PITA to deal with. careful what you might put on them - no dressings and careful with a wax. the flat black paint on these grills are difficult to treat - my best advice is to just leave them washed and qd'd. as for the rest of the car - do your best work. the paint on those old cars usually has about 10 or more layers(no clear). a couple coats of a polish and a coat of wax/sealant and i'm sure your client will be more than satisfied. if you've got more questions feel free to pm me or email me.

Thanks sonnydaze...........i was wondering what would be the best polish in this case for swirls............1z or menzerna? I am going to do either poorboys ex-p or the klasse twins. Just let me know about the polish..........i want this car to be perfect! and thanks for the tips on the grills. I hate grills.

I would use the Menzerna Intensive Polish followed by Menzerna Final Polish and go for the Klasse Twins myself. I have yet to use the 1Z so I can only speak from my experience. I only detail high end AMC Gremlins and they demand the best!!:D

Ya know, here is an odd thing. I used to detail a silver/grey 308 here in Texas and he sold it about 3 years ago.....Hmmmm

I'd go with Meguiars SFP #82 (DACP #83 if needed) to remove the swirls and probably finish with Clearkote's Vanilla Moose and Meguiars #16 Paste Wax. Guarantee that will be a winning combo on that color.

I did an F40 at the end of last season.

DACP, Swirl Free Polish, #7, and MPPP. Came out amazing. I like the "treat it like it's yours" advice, which of course, applies to any car you'd work on. But yeah, not much special, just have to be careful with the polisher/buffer around all those vents and intakes.

well max, since i've never tried the menzerna before i can only speak for 1z. it's the only polishes that touch any of the Ferraris i do. 2 coats of PP followed by a coat of MP, EP, or GW and they look awesome - the way they're suposed to look. if the swirls are really bad you may need one coat of UP in there - don't worry it won't bother anything as long as you foolow up with the PP.

I just did a Charcoal Gray Audi S4, using Menzerna FP, followed by the new Wolfgang twins. It came out beautiful.

Where abouts in Rochester are you, or do you work?? I too am in the Rochester area, namely webster, pittsford, perinton, penfield, fairport, and mendon (I rarely hit the west side, but sometimes. And i also cover alot of buffalo)

Everyone, thanks so much for all the suggestions...I am sure they will help. Man, I love being around obsessed detailers like yourselves. My friends think I am crazy. I always tell them...what's wrong with being clean? They just shrug and walk away.

I don't own wolfgang or any klearkote products...but i think i may have to get some.

I'll now be able to detail the ferrari to the best of my ability. Thakns again guys.

Btw....tpgsr.....I live in Brighton when I'm home for the summer, but I got to school in Oneonta. Never heard of it? You're not alone.

Later guys...

yeah ok so get this...i asked this customer when we could get around to detailing the ferrari....and that his uncle closed the garage door on his car several times! oh my god....it's a 20 year old, great condition ferrari and now it's sitting in the paintshop. I guess you can throw the words "all original" out the window now. I feel bad for both the owner and the car :0(

Thanks again for all the tips though. If he lets me get at it after the body shop is done with it i will let all of you know. I will have to get creative though because I won't be able to put wax on the fresh paint.........hmmm.........I should just go ahead and tell the guy to have the body shop buff the heck out of the whole car.

Yep, I'll bet they'll put a heap of swirls and holograms into the paint for you remove..... (Assuming they are not a high-end only shop)
