Favorite Leather treatment/protection

For years I've used Lexol leather cleaner and conditioner. But I never considered also 'protecting' the leather from UV etc.

What are your favorite products for treat/protection?

:dcrules

I like 4*. It does not really change the sheen and has a nice smell. My leather is in like new condition so I am after the protection.

Has anyone got any experience with Optimum Protectant Plus?

I've also heard you can use 303 Aerospace for protectant. That seems like it might be greasy.. though I haven't tried it yet.

I have two and depending on what I am working on is the one that I use...Leatherquie is one for restoration more for the older leathers that need some life put back into them

For mt regular details..PB LS is the one...smells great, makes the leather feel fresh and new again!

The 303 is not greasy if used properly. 303 is to be applied and buffed thoroughly. Too many people make the mistake of just wiping it on without buffing it after application.

The following is copied from a very old thread.
It describes my leather care for our 2000 Pontiac GTP with GM coated leather.

Weekly:
1. I wipe the entire seat with the Woolite/water solution which includes the leather and the vinyl areas. I really don't know on the Pontiac what is leather and what is vinyl.
2. I wipe the same entire area with a cloth dampened with just water and wipe it dry to remove any soap residue from the Woolite mixture.
3. I then apply 303 to the entire seat and buff it off thoroughly.

Once a month:
I do steps 1 and 2, but for the 3rd step, I apply 4 Star Leather Conditioner to all of the front side of the seat. Some of that area is leather, some is vinyl. I put it on all of it.

Seems to be working for me. The seats in the GTP still look new, including the side bolsters. The car is about 57 months old with 43,000 miles on it. It is driven everyday, just not a long distance.
The only real change is that the car is now almost 8 years old, (July), with 64,000 miles on it. The seats are still in great shape. Seems to still be working for me.
As I have said in the past, I don't know if the conditioning/protecting is what keeps the leather in good shape or if it's because I clean it regularly. Since it works for me, I don't plan to change. :)

Thanks. I'll have to give that a go. My new car doesn't have much leather, just the steering wheel, shift knob/boot and ebrake boot. That doesn't mean I don't want it looking good though.

Thats all that I have on mine as well and I have been happy with PB'S NL.
I don't know if it does much in the way of conditioning, but it does leave it with a clean rich look.

I am a big fan of PB NL it leaves a nice finished appearance. I am also a big fan of the Zymol cleaner and conditioner.

One thing I should mention is the fact that the Four Star Leather Conditioner is the version prior to the present "Poly Charged" product. I have not used the new version so I can't comment of how it will do.

Actually, the whole "Poly Charge" thing is way beyond my comprehension. Having it added to the product during the manufacturing process might be of some value, but if I felt I had to add something to a product to make it worth using, I would probably find a different product.

Well maybe i'll see if I can get away with cleaning/conditioning with Lexol and then protecting with 303 the way Charles outlined.

Lexol was recommended to me by a guy that did shoe repair as the only product he would use.
I used it for years, but was never impressed with the smell.
As I think back on the previous cars I owned with leather interior that I treated with Lexol, they all had some problems by the time they were 3 years old.
The GTP is close to 8 years old and has no problems yet. Maybe the Lexol wasn't doing as good of a job as I had thought. :dunno:

Any one use the PB trim restorer? According ot PBs website, it can be used on leather and has UV protectant.

Eh I dunno. Sometimes I wonder if the add-pack to make things smell pretty is doing anything good for the parts it's being applied to.

I don't mind the smell. I just want to keep things nice.

I wouldn't use TR on the seats, maybe a steering wheel but not the seats as a leather conditioner.

I believe one thing about leather and car care in general...if you take the time to keep the car reasonably clean on a regular bases and do your best to keep up with a protection plan. The car will show much less wear over time than one that doesn't...

I firmly believe that the products you use have little barring over how well the car finish holds up, but rather the frequencies of cleaning and protecting.

My point in this is, all of the cars that I have owned I have taken good care of...at the point of sale they looked much better than any car of the same year and mileage...so its not just the product per-say its the application and frequency IMO

I don't think TR would be good to use, nor 303. I'm sure PB leather product is good becuase all of there products are good. From personal experience I recommend two products: Connolly's Hide Care and the Four Star Leather conditioner. Like CW said I don't get the polycharge thing, but it works well.

I also used the Lexol cleaner and I thought it worked well too. I have the Connolly's cleaner and it is good, but its a pain to use because you have to dilute it.

303 is recommended only for coated leather by 303.
It seems to work fine on the Pontiac GP leather, but I don't think it would be the right product for uncoated leather.
By the same token, lots of people claim that leather conditioners are of no value on coated leather.
:dunno:
