FAQ on different polish levels

i've searched past threads and people always mention SMR or FII-FIII.

Is there a FAQ on rule of thumb when using a particular glaze. If I am correct, certain ones are more abrasive then others.

If I had swirls all over my car, do I use SMR. If SMR doe's not fill up the swirls, then do I step up to FII or do I head right into using FII. I guess 3m Fine Cut is for extreme paint conditions ?

According to 3M, SMR and FI-II share the same level of aggressiveness. Many here believe that FI-II is more aggressive, but I am not convinced. I believe that FI-II is packaged and sold as a finishing material, as the label says. SMR is relatively the same, but labeled for swirl mark removal. Either way, they are close cousins at the least. I have not used FI-III, but I believe I recall reading that it was a definite step up in aggressiveness.

I would say that the one you start with depends on the severity of your paints condition. Experience will allow you to make an educated guess where to start, but for now start with the SMR. If the results are not satisfactory, then try the FI-II. SMR and FI-II are fairly mild, so it may take a couple of applications to get the results you desire.

I would stay away from the fine cut for now. It is an aggressive product that will leave swirls of its own, and to remove them you must back down the aggressive ladder, so to speak. After using fine cut, you would need to follow with FI-II.
