Is there any hope for the condition of my car? Its in Socal now, but it original came from Illinois. (snow, salted roads)

What i've tried...and failed:

-Engine degreaser, power wash w/brush and dish washing sponge. (rough side)

-Brasso (slightly worked, but still have thick dark spots everywhere)

-Steam cleaner.

I was thinking steal wool for everything but i read about not using it on polished aluminum? So that would rule out my timing chain cover and valve covers...which look the worse.

Any suggestions on how to tackle this?

Rust tends to be only effectively removed by either media blasting or replacement of the metal. Obviously the first isn't a option with the parts still located on the engine.

I've been doing Autobody work as another hobby and have had very good success with removing rust by letting the parts soak in one of the various chemicals on the market made for just that.

Their are Hi-Temp coatings made for engine/exhaust parts but they need to be applied after the rust is removed.

My advice is to go to a bone yard and "pull" the parts you need. Clean and remove any rust on those and have them coated. Then use those as replacement parts.
