Back in 1962, a VW service manager explained why my VW cost so much to maintain.
It was very simple.
"If you want economy, you have to pay for it."

I once read that the battery packs in electric vehicles were good for about 7 years and the replacement batteries would cost about the same as the gas you didn't burn.
Still, IMO, anything that reduces our dependence on other countries is a good thing.
