Edge pad system... whats the point?

I've seen a few people raving about the Edge pads so I decided to look into them. I'm not trying to start trouble here, but I don't see whats so great about them. They say you don't need a backing plate, but you need to buy their $18 adaptor for the pads to work. They make them double sided, which they say saves you money by not having to buy so many one-sided pads, however, they cost twice as much as most other pads. Also, they say changing pads is simple, but I have no problems removing a velcro backed pad and switching it out. I just don't see why they're so "revolutionary" (using their own hype word). When you buy into the Edge pads you buy into their "system" and you're forced to keep using their pads because you invested in their adaptor which only works with their pads, whereas if you buy a normal velcro backing plate from Sonus, you can then use Sonus, Meguiar's, and many other brands velcro-backed pads. Again, I'm not trying to start an argument or knock the product, I just want to know if theres an advantage I'm missing with the Edge system.

Nothing short of brilliant if you ask me. They just need to convince the consumer. And if the consumer(s) find the actual foam to be of greater value then conventional methods (Sonus), then "Edge" could reep tremendous benefits.......Marketing, as with any product, is pivotal with any products success in the beginning. The product should sell itself eventually, through word of mouth, and an occasional advertisement to refresh newcomers, of its existance.

Sometimes change is good, and if not for the better, it evokes additional engineering, which in itself, creates new dynamics, and successes.

I'm not saying change isn't good, I just don't know if I'd want to buy into a system like that where I can only use their pads. For example, I started out using only the SFX pads and backing plate. However, I got into a jam and needed a pad quick (like that day). Rather than wait two to three days for another Sonus pad to arrive, I went down to a local shop that carries the Meguiars 6.5" pads. It was nice to have a 'universal' backing plate which allowed me to use whatever brand pad I wanted.
 
I like this thread!! I"m interested to see who likes what. Sorry I can't help you with Edge pads, I have been using Meg's pads for awhile and looking to change to something new. I have my reasons. maybe this should be a poll to start with.

You make some good points so let's go shoping and see the price difference of each system.



Velcro sysyem : a sonus plate cost $16.95



Velcro SFX Pads cost between $11.95 and $10.95 for one pad .



SFX pad kit $56.95 , you get one backing plate , 3 single sided velcro pads and 2 bonnets .







Edge 2000 pad system : adapter $17.95



Edge 2000 pads $17.95 for two pads



Edge 2000 pad kit , ( since Autopia doesn't carry them I got the price from AG) $95.00 you get one adaptor, 2 MF towels and 5 double sided pads that would be the equivalent of 10 velcro pads.



True the price difference is $38 however you get 7 more pads , so do the math on which system is cheaper overall. What the Edge adapater allows you to do is center the pads and quickly change them. Another plus to the system is the wide selection of pads in 6 different textures not to mention the newly available wool pads for the PC .



So to me its a no-brainer , to quote you " When you buy into the Edge pads you buy into their "system" and you're forced to keep using their pads because you invested in their adaptor which only works with their pads" to that I say ,with so many different pads to offer the deatiler why would you want any other pad system. JMO :buffing:
 
I Have to agree You are locked in. But I'm Happly locked in. I have the Edge 2k adapters for both the PC and the Rotary. I can mix and match the pads at will I can go from my 8 Inch pads to 6 inch to 3 inch (if i can get Arron to make them again) on either of my machines at anytime. with out changining anything but the pad. Yes i like them I in fact love them..

I want to know more about the 3 inch pads for the EDGE system. Lets hear more about them May need another thread though

Arron had made them before as a trial for someone (FREE) and then he didn't like the system so he turned arouns and sold them($$$) So there is only on set othe the 3 inchers out there
 
I really dont think the speed at which you can change a pad out is a selling point, unless your moving to smaller diameter pads, then its a bonus. I have no experience with the Edge "system" or the foam itself. This may start a war, but I think Edge users are loyal to their product, just as some famous sealant product users are. Ive seen it on different forums how they claim the Edge is in a class of its own. True, its unique. Is it better? Dont know, but i am curious. Will I buy into it? Doubt it.

If it works, good. I just dont want to hear how its the best thing available. (And im not saying thats what has happened here)
 
I have also read several posts where the adapter failed and damage was actually done to the paint. That is what scares me and prevents me from buying it. Something about metal hitting painted surface that doesn't sound good.

I looked into that system and decided against it. I'm sure the pads are gr8t and all. But I have no probelms with the time it takes me to change/center pads on my velcro backing plates. As far as changing the backing plate for a different size pad, my Dewalt 849 requires no tools for that just depress a button and spin the plate off.



Nice idea though, I suppose if you were looking to start from scratch it could be a viable option.
 
Ive used the system, and personally, I think it is very functional. It definitely

can save time, and allow for better aligned pad on the machine being used.

I feel the system is better suited for rotary use than PC, since having the pad

properly aligned on a rotary is more important thanit is on a PC. And it actually

comes out cheaper in the long run to buy the system and replacement pads

versus just buying single sided pads.
 
The single sided edge classic 8 inch foam pads are what I have and love them as you can buff plastic, door stripes with the contour section of the pad

It's $23.00 dollars for a single pad, up to $60 for a double sided. My standard makita backing plate accepts them and any other 6-8 inch pad such as the 3M perfect it's and Sonus SFX pads I have.



The double sided system is very smart though.
