dried paint , surboard wax

HI All,

I want to use a mild mild cleaner to reduce some almost unnoticeable surface imperfections (light scratches and swirls) in my paint before I apply Sovereign. It is a daily driver car so I want to use a Klasse product first (for durability) then the Sovereign. What would be the best method?

Klasse AIO-Klasse HGS-Sovereign

3m SMR-Klasse HGS-Sovereign

Any advice appreciated.

Joe

All In One is a very very very weaker cleaner/swirl mark remover. I would be surprised if it was even strong enough to take care of your swirls.

I would use the All In One of half of your door and the 3M SMR on the other half, boths sides will have less swirls but you can see which product works better for your method of application.

By the way, I just had to comment, you've got a very very nice car. Corvettes by far are my fav car.

Klasse gets the shine:

1. Wash

2. Clay

3. SMR

4. A-I-O

5. SG (at least 1 coat)

6. Carnauba of choice (Souveran maybe best, others have better longevity)

If you use a long-lived carnauba (I use Griot's Paste, others recommend Blitz, I think), you only need a washer/wax every week to look freshly detailed for months.

928-S eh? I was thinking of getting one of those, they are the front engine V8 correct? My uncles buddy has one (fixes cars for a living) and he told me how nice they were but how you need to consider parts and all that. There are so many special editions of the 944's with the side skirts, out fitted with roll cages, hood scoops, rims, seats, interiors, wide body kits, they really are nice cars. However, I'm not rich and can't afford the parts, I would however take a brand new corvette engine and swap it to the 944 but then your screwing up the porsche in the porsche.

Anyhow... yes you are right, if you want, you can just use wax, keep the car clean and re-wax every two weeks (if it's a daily driver) to maintain that "fresh wax" look since the wax will fade quite a bit faster than the Glaze.

P.S. Do you have a web page, pictures, mod list or anything about your Porsche?

JoeD:

Here's a pic shot by the PO. It really does not do justice to the current shine:

The car is fun -- extreme fun -- to drive. :D It's a 1985 928-S EURO with 310+HP. It came with a RinSpeed widebody conversion kit (wide body panels, wider wheels and tires, bigger brakes, and [maybe] more horsepower). I've had it up to 120MPH in 3rd (4 speed automatic), but backed off, preferring to keep my license. It supposedly pulls .83G on a skidpad.

The 928 is fairly cheap to buy, but you need to get the "right" one. Read up on the guidelines in these two forums:

928 Message Board

RennList (pick the 928 page)

Since I detailed the car, I just wash it each week with Blue Coral carwash (contains carnauba, $3 a gallon at WalMart) and it looks freshly waxed for the whole week.

Enjoy.

Yea you can tell how the car is wider on all sides, the side skirts under the door give it away! :)

My uncles friend has one, you know what really surprises me. They made the 928 and that was there big seller, then the 944 came along which started as the the 924 and so many things were changed they went to a new name, hense the 944, from there they made the s type of the 944 and one other model and they changed the cam, the radiator, the brakes, intake manifold and soooo much. They were going to come out with another Porsche model that was supposed to be the next step up from the 944 but retain the same roots but they gave it another name ......... hense the 968, I think that one had a v8 (maybe a v6, prob a V8) 330 hp. Those cars really are something, I would love to take a spin in one of those some day to see what I passed up. I have a 1999 Camaro Z28 SS with 330 horsepower and 345 pounds of torque pulling 0-60 in 4.4. You can try to handle my suspension but until I dump a good 1200.00 into it, your taking your life to the edge if you make a turn while that pedal is pinned. You haven't seen wheel hop until you stepped on it in my car :xyxthumbs

So, why look further? The Camaro sounds like a rocket car to me.

The Porsche debate will rage on forever:

water- vs air-cooled

8 cylinders vs 4 or 6

front engine or rear

The 928 was big, heavy, and overpriced. It was designed to cross Germany (or elsewhere) as quickly and comfortably as a private helicopter. It was never really successful, but the cutting-edge engineering remains in use in the fastest production cars today.

Porsche is about to release an SUV, the Cayene. It will be a front-engined, water-cooled V8, and the drivetrain will be ported into their next generation GT, the successor to the 928, which will be revealed in a couple of years. This uber-car will probably cost $150K.

E

I really like your car, who care's if it didn't sell. Look at the Camaro's, they arn't selling so they won't be made after 2002. That's a crime. Your Porsche is bad bud.

I heard thier SUV would use the twin turbo v6 that is in the awd twin turbo porsche they sell for 180,000.00 to 250,000.00

Companies build cars to make money, so the marketplace dictates what models get discontinued. I grew up loving the Camaro/Firebird muscle cars. My friend has the last model Firehawk. (Tears...)

W/R/T Porsche: I really enjoy the 928 and hope to keep it for a while. I hope the SUV is successful so we can keep seeing more new models come along.

dried paint , surfboard wax

Last week I had 2 jobs totally kick my a$$~X(

One had dried smeared white paint EVERWHERE......leather ,carpet ,headliner and vinyl . Most were smeared ,some were big globs. The only thing with hours of work and srcubbing that I had that worked was goof off (professional strength )The leather was already damaged and chewed up. Th eowner tried to clean it herself and smeared it all around, then let it sit for 6 months before calling me.

Anyone got a better solution for dried paint? I tried 4 other solvents that I had and nothing even touched it! Even laquer thinner!

Then I had a surfer with gobs and gobs of melted surf wax melted onto his rear liner and carpet . I got most of it off with a razor blade and credit card and melted alot off with extreemly hot water on his removable vinyl liner but one area of carpet I would like to try and get it looking better .

Anyone got a product that will do this ? Thanks for any help!!!

Hey DC !
Sorry to hear about those jobs from "Hail" - they really make one crazy. :)

Awhile back I had an Infiniti G35 black leather that had a lot of white paint on the seats, leather parts of the console, and leather, plastic of the door panel, and the only thing that worked for me was my VX5000 Steamer, carefully used to not get the leather too hot, but get the paint hot enough to get it to loosen its grip. Took a long time, but it came off.

Im surprised Goof Off didn't do it, but leaning on the more conservative approach of dwell time on the leather, it might not work as well.
I only use Goof Off on the end of a Qtip and very, very carefully, as I am sure you do also.

Everytime I see a vehicle all marked up with paint inside, it makes you wonder, what were they thinking????? :)

I guess if you freeze wax long enough it should flake off would be the only alternative for me - heating it and having it spread in liquid form would only make it worse, as you already know.
Perhaps try a little dry ice on the wax to quickly freeze it and then scrape it loose and vacuum it out ?

Good luck, DC !

Thanks Dan

The goof off DID work , but it took forever and on the leather it was too harsh . After a couple passes it started to take the leather finish off. I was able to get some of the splatters off , carefully with my fingernail . It was just very laborous , tedious work ! Also when it came off it came off with the goof off , it came off in little bits and kept getting spread and sticking to other areas on the vinyl. There has to be an easier /better way ! I may have to get a steamer!!

When I asked the woman about the paint , she didnt know if it was water based or oil but it was house paint . She said she called several detailers that asked the same question . So why didnt she tell me about it when she called me?!:confused:I even told he I would have refused the job had I known what condition the car was in . I was a little upset with her about several things
including having to follow and wait 30 minutes at the bank for her to get paid! Anyway at least she tipped me and passed out my cards at her work.

On the surf wax I got all of it off on the surface , the only things thats left is the wax thats actually melted and become one with the carpet !

DC,

So maybe she was holding the gallon of Glidden on her lap, going over railroad tracks repeatedly to shake it, and the lid came off ? :scared:

Yeah, I agree, if I had seen the destruction, I would have either charged her X2 the going rate with no guarantees, or walked away; that's why she didnt tell you because others had refused to work on it already. Nice.... Nice lady.....

Thankfully, its all behind you and you survived it with you sanity intact ! :)

The Steamer is a great addition to one's supplies, and the cheapest one I have found is from some guy in the midwest I think, and he sends alot of extra accessories with it that are pretty costly if you buy them separately, and with free shipping. I really like mine and use it more and more for things and am learning how to use it better each time.
What it did for our Microwave inside the Kitchen, was well worth the price easily. ;) And it also does great in the Oven and all your tile, etc...
I figure once I paid for it in Details, that the price of a gallon of distilled water - $.89 is way cheaper than even a couple of different products I would use to clean an interior already. I hardly use any cleaners inside a car anymore, so that cost will be going down this year.

Geez, the stuff you had to go through to get paid - wow, this Client is going on the "piece of work" roster for sure ! :)

Take care !

Nice.... Nice lady.....:rolleyes:That thought crossed my mind too !But she was such a train wreck she could have just forgotton to tell me

Thankfully, its all behind you and you survived it with you sanity intact ! :)barely , by the grace of God!

[In a nutshell .....When I got there she didnt tell me it was an apt and she didnt give me a an apt number so when I called her she was still asleep and had to wait 10 minutes for her to even come out !I also had to work on a busy street because there was no room anywhere else for me.(I hate that!) When her driver door shut her side mirror broke off in peices on the ground !(it was already broken)Not only was the interior thrashed ,her paint felt like 80 grit sandpaper! And was filthy ! She told me she would have it washed but obviously hadnt been washed in weeks. Her tires were so bald the steel cords were sticking out everywhere .It just seemed to spiral downhill from there ............right up until the very end having to wait for her to pick a check up from her work so she could pay me cash from her bank !

Actually I am amazed I didnt lose my temper with her . I got to talk to God all day long about granting me patience with her :biggrin:I also had a few people with nice cars stop and ask for my card and In the end I bought myself some flowers with the tip she gave me , I deserved it!!So it wasnt a completely bad day , just mostly!:biggrin:I can laugh about it now!

DC -

Holy Cow !!

Looks like this poor lady needed an Angel and you were called - thanks so much for answering the call and working through this for her.

I am sure the challenges you went through were appreciated and also made you stronger for getting through them.

The referrals you will get from this adventure will soon far outweigh the extreme negatives you met head on and pushed through.

And your helped beautify that Apt. Complex - 1 car at a time ! :):):)
Great job, DC ! Am so proud of you !

Far from an angel Dan :D but your sweet to say that!Sometimes I have to remind myself that you dont know why a person is the way the are and try not to judge . Maybe shes had some hardships in in her life and just cant get her act together , you never know !She was very young to and probably still trying to find her way in the world.

Anyway Im going to check out some surfboard shops and see if they have anything for wax removal. I cant seem to find anything on google.

You know, depending on how extensive the damage, it may be easier to clean the paint off with the Goof-Off, then clean and re-dye the interior. I re-dyed the leather seats on my 22year old Porsche with a kit from Leather World- perfect dye match, natural/original looking results and still holding up perfectly after 2 years. It took me a total of $50 and about 2 hours over 2 days to clean the leather, repair a crack and then apply two coats of dye.

If your customer has the patience for the kit to arrive and allow for 2 days work time, I'm sure you could make money, spend less time and have a very satisfied customer.

It's an option...

Thanks PJ........I would rather not experiment on her car with something I haven t done before but thanks for mentioning it. I referred her to a leather repair shop .Sounds like a great kit though!

I found a product for surfboard wax removal called "sticky bumps wax remover "
"Product Description
Product Description
Is your board a mess with wax build-up? This formula will remove that gunky wax and you can start clean and fresh! Takes wax off your board, and out of the carpet in your car from that last hot day Remover and cleaner dissolves all waxes, tars, adhesives and more... NOTE: Avoid getting it on the board's name/logo. The acetone will take the paint off and smear it all over that part of the board. 8 ozs

that only took me a couple hours to find! :D

Like all new things, I was a bit tentitive about re-dyeing as well. I was stunned how simple it was though. Thoroughly clean it with the supplied cleaner, repair cracks with supplied crack sealer (glue, basically), then apply the dye with a sponge. It's practically idiot proof! Right up my alley!

Sounds like you may have found a solution to your wax problem though- thanks for sharing! As a child, I once left a red crayon on the blue carpet of my grandfather's car. It was hot that day. The melted crayon became a permanent accessory to his carpet!

Looks like you found the solution to your wax problem.

I had some red candle wax imbedded in a white home carpet. After hitting it with ice and scraping with plastic razor blades I used a steam iron and thick terry towel on the remaining residue. Placed a clean section of towel over the wax and hit it with the hot iron with liberal steam. The towel soaked it all out after repeated applications with clean portions of cloth. Perhaps not practical for an auto application.
