Dressing Trim??

How does everyone dress their trim? I have tried a few different products all with the same problem... Once it rains i will get oily streaks down the sides of the car from the treated window trim, ect. Does anyone else have this same problem? What do you do about it?

Thanks

I just ordered some 303 aerospace protectant. Does this streak after rain too? I'll save it for just the interior if it does because I ordered some AIO and already have VM :)

Which out of the 3 darken the rubber/trim the best? My trim is new but already looks a little faded ( I guess the car being black doesn't help)

Thanks!

I used 303 for quite some time and it does streak. I have been using Megs #40 for the last few weeks and it holds up pretty well. Key is to buff off any excess.

I use AIO but before the first application give the trim a few rub downs with IPA and a terry cloth . When no more color transfer its clean. This will lift any oxidization off the rubber and bring it back to black .. then apply AIO.

Thing I also like about applying AIO .. if you get a little on the window .. who cares .. polishes off ..

Yep, AIO and VM. I top the AIO with either SG or BF; I don't bother topping the VM. The BF seems to darken things pretty well, but I dunno about using it on soft rubber. I use Souveran on the exterior rubber trim on the XJS, have for many years, but this is so outside-the-box/Autopian Heresy that I guess I shouldn't recommend that anyone else do it.

Hmmm, I've been using 303 on all my black plastic exterior trim and have never seen it streak when it gets wet. It beads nicely and gives a nice satin finish. I love the stuff.

Accumulator,

I don't find it that far outside the box; I've found that pretty much every non-staining LSP I have can be used on smooth plastic and hard rubber trim with decent results. Zaino, AIO, FMJ, WG, S100, and EX have all darkened/shined up my trim to one degree or another, and I've never had a problem with staining or residue (caveat: rough textured plastic may prove difficult to remove residue from, depending on the product used).

I stick with 303 on soft rubber seals and such, though.

I've also had great success with Meg's #40 and have been using it on exterior trim for years. I've not had any problems with streaking, but I would recommend re-applying it after every couple washes. I'm considering alternatives for better longevity and will probably experiment with Zaino on trim soon.

Usually what you are seeing with the streaking is excess product that washes off your trim down your paint. Apply the product liberally to your trim, and then use a dry towel and wipe off the excess. After that I park the car outside in the hot sun to evaporate any more excess. Even if it rains the same night, I rarely get any streaks using this method.

Vinylex is very good, too (I've seen it a Pep Boys locally). No streaking, cleans and finishes, with a toothbrush, removes sling and provides UV protection. I get 6-8 months out of an application. I use it on all my rubber and plastic. After my grout incident, I'm now trying it on the plastic fender liners.
