are you talking about the rubber trim on the outside or the piece on the inside of the glass? this is a pretty dark photo it is a bit hard to see clearly. there are a lot of products mentioned in the trim care forum. read read and then read some more is how I got the Ideas of what product and processes to try.

The trim that you are talking about is the metal / plastic coated on the inside of the window...it looks like yours is cracked up a bit in the pic that you've posted...is this what you are trying to correct???

Yes its the metal one i mean !:D

The best that you can do with that is a paint cleaner..do not use any polish that is aggressive...that part is plastic coated and a paint cleaner is a chemical based polish...no abrasives...the way that I did mine was to tape off the grainy area...

Then with the paint cleaner..use a cotton pad to clean the area...since yours are cracked I don't see that coming out but the cleaner will help it a lot!

is that a plastic film over it that could maybe be removed and then clean the trim and protect with some sort of protectant?

that's what I'm thinking too :hmmm: but a better picture would certainly help :inspector:

I've had two BMW that have had this trim..its not a coating of plastic, that can be peeled off... its more of a plated type of clear coating...that's the cracked part that you are seeing...IMO there is not a lot that can be done about it...using something like PP would help, but only smooth out finish some...to an extreme you could wet sand it to take off the clear...then polish..but replacement might be easier..
