I want to advertise my business using a post card but i dont know what i should put. Of course, my name, the business address, phone number, and email are the norm but what else should i put? Should i include pricing? Or should i explain the importance of detailing (especially when it snows)? There isnt much space and i just want to sound professional before mass produce it and send it to a target market...thanks in advance...

i would stop all together and put your money toward purchasing some adwords and internet marketing. it's 2011 man, no one's gonna read your postcard. Consider there is probably a 3-6% return on investment with bulk mailing.

Depends on your market area. I can send out 800 flyers and easily get 30 or so details from it. Granted that's only ~3.5% return, but the cost for hitting 800 homes is less than $150.00, including printing and mailing.

I do agree that internet advertising is important though, and would definitely invest in a web site, search engine optimization, etc.

I spent over 200$ in adwords, got nothing but out of area people clicking. Direct marketing in my area seem to work best for my market.

All contact info is a must.

YOu need something on the card that makes the people want to call. The word FREE still stops people from just chucking the card.

Cheers,

GREG

I use postcards as a reminder to my existing customers, and also thank you cards after getting detailed. If you are looking for NEW customers, then the internet will be your best bet. Keep in mind your current customers already hopefully like you and the job you did, maybe a reminder card will be your best bet.

Greg, I'd recommend that you either hook up with someone who knows SEM (Search Engine Marketing) or if you're the DIY type, grab a good book on the subject. You can target VERY specific kinds of clicks for a great ROI with a little know-how.

I hear all the time from people who have invested heavily into SEM. Most of them get no response and quit, the rest are making bank. The difference between the two? The ones who did well either worked with a person/company who knew how to play the game or learned how to do it themselves.

HTH, as I've certainly enjoyed your excellent write-ups and tips in the past.

PS: your signature is one of my favorites. I certainly can agree with that sentiment.

Adwords are just a waste of money IMO. If you are gonna use it though, you can narrow what searching it appears in down to a 20 mile radius from your zip code.

Marketing is more than just postcards or sponsored search ads. To answer your question, you need to read up on advertisement basics first. What is the headline going to be? The sub-headline? What benefits are you going to mention on the postcard? What is the call to action? The answers to these questions need to be addressed before anything graphical is done. If you have a properly targeted mailing list, postcards can definitely be part of your general marketing plan. As mentioned they can also be a great follow-up tool. Obviously you need to consider your website and internet presence. There are so many marketing weapons. Selecting the right ones, and combining them together, are what get results.

In that regard, perhaps he could design the card like a $20 bill and say "get $20 off with this card when you book by March 30." I though about doing that for existing clients.

Specifically on Adwords: It is absolutely not a waste of money. If you target the right area and choose the right keywords, it is a very valuable marketing tool. I target a 20 mile radius from where I live. Only people who are searching for my keywords in this radius see my ad. The keywords are mainly things people search when they are looking for mobile auto detailing services. I only pay when someone sees my ad and decides it is relevant to what they are shopping for. If my website shows up on the first page of organic results, my ad usually runs in the sponsored section. This is repetition, and that helps to gain people's interest in your business.
