Do you think I can fix these scratches with a DA polisher?

I backed up on my friend's 2007 Toyota Camry and I need to replace his bumper. But, I don't want to pay $500 (w/ paint) for a new one because his bumper was not in top condition when I hit it. So, we agreed on buying a used bumper, but I need to know if I could fix these scratches with my DA polisher.

Here is what I have...

Griot's Garage 6 Polisher, M105, M205, LC 5.5 Orange, White Pads.

Are the scratches down to the metal? Will I need to use epoxy, wet sand the area, and paint the area (not confident in getting a quality finish with spray paint)? I need advice (approach/products) from people who have fixed these types of major scratches.

Well first of all, that's ABS plastic, not metal. Second, yeah several of those spots are all the way down into the plastic, meaning they'll probably need a bit of filler work and then primer/base/clear applied. You might be able to make it look "presentable" at 10 feet away using DIY techniques, but the only way to make it truly right would be to refinish the whole part.



That's for a Toyota Camry, right? I'm pretty sure you can find a used bumper cover in better shape than that easy enough.

I checked on ebay and toyota forums, but this bumper was the best I could find in the $100 range. There were other bumpers that were repainted for $350, but seemed pricey for a reconditioned bumper. I guess I have to keep looking...

$350 is actually pretty reasonable for a reconditioned bumper if the reconditioning was done properly.

I found a new bumper cover for $209.32 + $27.21 (shipping) = $236.53 but I don't know how my local body shop calculates the costs for priming, painting, and clear coating. I updated the estimate I got today and as you can see they were planning to replace the left fender and left halogen lights. My goal is to reduce the costs to around $1500 by finding my own parts since the body shop owner was okay with bringing in my own parts.

The guy that does all of my painting work is meticulous - that's why I go to him, because he is so detail oriented - and he just about refuses to refinish a damaged bumper cover. He says the reason is that to really do it correctly & get the quality & duration he expects, he has to completely strip the old finish off before applying the new. Just cleaning up the damaged areas always results in, by his standards, a sub-standard job. By the time it's completely stripped, you have enough labor $$ in it that you can buy a new cover & eliminate the hassle.
