Do you always need pressure?

I did my first big detail this past weekend. I was using the PC7424 w/ orange LC CCS pad (white was not cutting it) and D151. I used the recommended 10-20lbs of pressure on the head of the machine. My question is how do you know if that is too much pressure? My pads were deforming under the pressure and it just didn't look like a good situation. I was also pretty darn sore the next day from applying that much pressure at all those different angles. Also, do I always need to use that much pressure? Or can I just use light pressure?

I use a good amount of pressure when trying to remove defects. If I am just polishing to increase gloss, I ease up on the pressure. Basically, the worse the swirls/scratches are, the more pressure I apply. To gauge when you are applying too much pressure, always make sure your pad is still spinning on the surface. When cutting with say M105 and an orange pad, I will bear down on the machine until the pad only spins one revolution a second. If the pads slows down more than that, I will let off on the pressure a bit.

Yeah, I agree. I usually apply about as much pressure as it'll accept without overcoming the clockwise rotation. Well, with 4" pads that'd take a lot so I don't apply nearly as much pressure with those.

someone suggested marking a black line on the backing plate so you can see the rotation easier. I did, and it really makes a difference.
