Do I really need an UDM for VW paint

I have an '04 Passat with dark green paint. This weekend while applying the DG 101 I noticed a few scratches on the hood. They are faint and not deep. I would like to remove them at some point and I have seen in some posts that VW has a "hard" paint. My question is whether I really need an UDM or will a Porter 7424 do the job. I can get a 7424 for well under $100 from ebay, etc, while the UDM is nearly 2x as much.

They are very nearly the same power. Either will be fine, I have used both and own the UDM, the UDM has a bit more oomph, but not enough to justify the cost increase. Keep in mind though that autopians get 10% off at autopia-carcare.com and that the UDM comes with a backing plate, pad, bag, and real customer service. I'm not pimping the UDM, that's just my personal opinion.

If you don't yet have a machine, I highly recommend the UDM. In the future you will be glad you baught it as your car's paint will not stay perfect forever and will likely need correction each year or so...possibly less if you are anal about wash technique.

You may be able to remove those scratches by hand though. Get some 1Z polish or some Megs Scratch X and work each scratch several times. It will likely take a long time but if there are only a few scratches it shouldn't be too bad.

You'd be way better off with a rotary on VW paint... Vw's are basically all I detail and it was SLOW going until I started to pick up the rotary. Either way you'll need patience, either b/c of the time it takes to correct vw paint with a PC or the time it takes to learn the rotary.
