Do I have to do a full repaint to fix this car? Is there no other option... (pics)

Hello this is a Toyota MR2 Turbo 1990, and the previous owner of it left it in the sun way too much. The paint is very faded, and there is no glossiness or shine at all anymore. Is the only solution to repair the car, is a full repaint? Someone suggested to me that a wax job and some polishing would be sufficient, is that true?



I am completely new to almost everything automotive related, so even paint is a mystery to me. Please help!

( In some of the pictures it looks like its just the sun shining on the car making it look very light, but its actually the paint that has been faded so much from its original darker red colour. )
 
It's just really bad oxidation. You'd be surprised how it would clean up. Looks a lot like my 95 samurai that I washed maybe 5 times in 10 years.
 
Man the oxidation on that car is just as bad as my 89 525i. If you really want to restore the paint of your car, it's going to cost you some money but not as much money as having the car repainted. :xyxthumbs
 
Wow I am very impressed by the pic with AIO, it looks very nice from before to after! I'm curious how much it would likely cost for me to restore this car myself though, and what exactly should I purchase? I know I should pick up one of those Klasse AIO, a PC(what does it abbrieviate?), some type of polish... how much would all the equipment and everything required probably cost?

a PC here is $99 here at our local hardware stores.. markets may be different.. pads will run you about $60.. and polishes etc should add another $30-$40.. the best part is you can detail your future cars. of course clean buckets, car soap, clay, mittens sponges, towels is a must..

You need some major polishing. You could try the sonus sfx system, or look up some other polishes in the review section.



Not sure if its clearcoat or not, but in general the two stages are very durable (and sensitive), and can be quite forgiving. Good luck, I hope you can save it.
 
I would be tempted to use AIO and clay first and then evaluate the paint for polishing.



The cost of doing it yourself is really just the purchase of the right tools which will also allow you to maintain the car is first class condition
 
Heh, I really didn't realize that his car was RHD. I guess I'm so used to seeing it nowadays.



You can click the link in my sig just to get an idea of what to buy. You don't have to buy everything that's on my list but I'm thinking you'll probably need Klasse AIO, PC (Porter Cable) 7424/7336, an assortment of Propel pads (probably 1 orange and 1 green minimum) for your PC, some type of polish to your preference, and a LSP (last step product). These are all addtional to the basic car wash items that you will need. Hope this helped. :xyxthumbs
