Do all MF towels start linting with age?

I have a bunch of about 2 year old Cobra towels and some of the older ones have suddenly started to lint. I didn't wash them with anything linty and I'm not a detailer so I don't use them all that much. Is it normal for once good towels to start leaving lint behind?

There was a long discussion (one of several over the months) about Cobra Towels and linting. I have towels from Prima and Pakshak (heck even Megs) and never had a linting problem with them. The Prima and Megs are over 3 years old and used about every other week at least and they show no signs of linting (knock on microfiber wood).

I have some Cobras that are 6 years old, and they don't lint. I don't use them every day, but I definitely use them a couple of times during the week.

Intrigued... Why is it a coincidence?

Pretty much what cptzippy said. There was just a thread about microfiber and I was telling the OP about the problems with Cobra MF and their low quality towels. Cant find that thread now though...

Exactly which Cobra MF towels are linting?

Hmmm.... The Cobra Deluxe I think, purple 16+16, 450gm I think. They're the worst, and they used to be my favorites. Then the dark green all purpose towel have been giving off lint as I remove polish.... Making it hard to see that are scratches left and what's lint. The yellow one always linted I know because I tried it on glass when new, so I never really used it. Pretty much all the ones I've used the most or are the oldest (purple). That's why I asked if it was age related. Of course now that they've all been washed with the purple ones that could have infected everything else.

I have a few coming from pakshak, but HI to NY could take a little while...

Your PakShak order shouldn't take long at all. Thats where I get my MF as well.

Really wish that other thread didn't get lost!
It didn't get lost it got deleted.

Guess there's no freedom of opinions on the site anymore.

It got lost. The admin didnt lock the boards between migrations. Means db was out of sync (older) than the "active" forum on the old server.

Some sorta-random thoughts on MF linting follow:

- Most of my MFs get less-plush and closer to "thread-bare". I think that's gotta be closely related (functionally speaking) to linting- loss of fibers and all.

- My MFs for glass (plush and WW, dunno about the "flat-woven" ones yet) always start to leave lint behind after a while even if they didn't initially.

- My other/regular plush MFs always lint to some degree, but not enough to matter except on glass (exception- Shamrocks, they really lint).

- IMO, if a MF lints so much that you can't tell the lint from marring, that MF oughta be retired/demoted to [crap]-duty.

- IME, *all* MFs wear out, just like cotton towels, just like most everything.

+1 on the above

No matter what brand of mf they lint to some degree... pakshak, meguiars, turtlewax, costco, eurow among others I've tried... The shorter the nap the more unnoticable the lints are but IME... They all lint... Turn on your halogen lights and you'll see what I meant..

Even the best waffle weave leaves micro filaments...

Using MF lints are something I have to live with.. of course lints visible even without halogen lights and consistent after multi-washes are not acceptable.. Thankfully I've never had towel with such behaviour..If the cobras fall into this category it's a shame since they're arguably the most expensive MF in the market..Never tried them since they're too expensive

As much as I love microfibers for their absorbancy they owe their power to static... and static goes both ways... it's easier to clean anything on paint but it makes it easier for the paint to attract dust making chamois look better... NOPE....

But hey...climate may influence what I experienced... it's tropical .. hot and humid.. MFs are made in korea... like pets maybe they cant stand hot and humid... so they lint the way pets shed....

I can say without question that many of my MF towels start to lint more after they have been used for a while. It sucks.

I absolutely agree: they all lint to one degree or another. This is my personal experience, but there are many on this site who will disagree with this.

My Eurow's are the worst offenders, but I shouldn't be surprised since they also have the most nap of any of them. Many people who use the Eurow's say that they get *no* linting. I sure do.

Excellent post thanks.

What brands are you mostly using and have you seen some wear longer than others before linting?

I buy the cheapest microfibers from stores like AutoZone or O'Reily's(Murray's). I have never noticed any linting and most have been washed many times. The only thing I have noticed is that they seem to lose plushness and become less absorbent. I assume there is some sort of loss with the towels, but have never actually seen pieces of lint in or out of the dryer.

The only cobra towels that lint for me was the green all purpose ones. However, that was an "older" version which later they "updated" with a fluffier version to match the blue all purpose ones.

I have a *scad* of different MFs, going back to the original "Miracle Towels"...sot this isn't all that simple for me to answer completely. I'll try to summarize:

I guess I use my PakShak Ultra Plush ones more than any others. None of those are linting to any appreciable degree, but then I don't do all that much polishing/LSPing these days so they'll probably last forever.

My suede-style ones from TOL (and also the dark blue ones I can't find anywhere/any more) don't lint.

(Those looking for a succinct answer can just stop reading here...)

No linting to speak of from my Meguiar's MF ("Ultimate") bonnets or from my seemingly crappy Cobra MF bonnets (which always work better than I expect them too, but I won't use 'em on good/soft paint).

I have some ?Excel? brand ones from Patrick that I use to clean certain areas during the wash, and those are holding up very well considering how much abuse they get.

My Monster Fluffies that I got from Bob (Danase) aren't linting badly, but they don't get much use.

My older MFs all lint a bit, but I only use those for [crap] duty. Those include the green ones from TACS, which did work great for many years, and my older Cobras. They would probably lint enough to bug me if I used them for polish/LSP buffing.

My Shamrocks lint something awful, but when I want that extreme plushness I guess it's worth it to me. My MFs for glass are all linting at present, except for those two old Cobras (the plush orange-yellow ones) that still seem unusually wonderful (note my other seemingly identical Cobra Glass MFs lint terribly).

I think you'd have better luck using those long nap plush towels like the shamrock or eurows for dry-use only such as dusting (without QD)...Use them wet and they'll drag, I think this dragging is the cause of their notorious linting issue
