As a citizen, I apologize to our service people.

The commander in chief is a D--K !!!
All of us here who have served honorably through 2-3 wars are appalled...
He insults the very people he is commander in chief over, every day...
He has no idea what the Military is, was, or has done...
There, I said it...
Do what you have to do..
I can take it..

The practice started with Reagan. Eisenhower never returned a salute.

There is another video where Obama enters Marine One to return and shake the hand of the Marine that was saluting him.

This is how a pro does it.

And hey Al, I was reading LGF (where I assume you got that from) since they were conservative

Bush comes back to return Marine's salute

Bush comes back to return Marine's salute

On tonight's Special Report with Brit Hume, (hosted by Jim Angle this evening), at the close of the show when they normally have some funny video clip, they showed President Bush and the First Lady on their way to Marine One to leave for Camp David for the weekend. Jim said "You will see the president notice something unusual on his way to Marine One".

As the video starts, the First Lady is leading the way into the helicopter with the spaniel dog on the leash, and the president is right behind her with the Scotty on the leash.

As the First Lady entered the chopper, the Marine at the gangway saluted and held his salute. The scottie the president was walking decided it wanted to squat right when he got to steps. The president pulled on its' leash, but the stubborn scottie persisted in squatting. The president bent down and scooped up the pooch and entered Marine One. After he entered the Marine cut his salute and returned to the position of attention.

Moments later the president reemerged from the helicopter and out onto the steps. The Marine was standing at attention, head and eyes straight ahead. The president leaned over and tapped him on the left arm. The startled Marine turned his body toward the president and received his returned salute!

I was so impressed by this true act of respect for our military people by our president! He really does get it. Most any other person of his staure would have just continued his journey, disregarding the neglected return salute. Not George W. Bush. He is earning the respect of the military community, not expecting it - as most would.

That was a lazy ass salute....no wonder secret service allowed a intruder in the White House. ..I can't stand him and his lies and no back bone !!

I'll agree it was a lazy salute but if President Dwight Eisenhower, a five star general, didn't return a salute there must be a reason. Eisenhower was a civilian, out of the military, and had no obligation to return the salute. I really don't care if Obama or Bush or any other President returns a salute while departing an aircraft. Protocol calls for members of the military to salute the President but I don't believe there is any protocol for the President to return the salute under any circumstances.

Yeah, but if you choose do it, do it right. At least move the cup to your other hand.

Not to mention the lack of hand on the heart during national anthem in most cases for this president. Or when he does have it there, the look on his face says he's only doing it cuz there is a camera nearby. When I coached softball, I told my girls they better have hats off and hands on heart during the national anthem or they would be sitting. We need to continue to teach our kids these things or they will go by the wayside. We already have half the country that doesn't care and just lives off the dole...up to all of us that give a rat's a$$ about this country, and what it was founded on, to not lose the other half. End rant.

The practice to put the hand over the heart is for the pledge of allegiance. It is not for the national anthem.

Again, the pro in action:

I guess we gave this guy a hard time too...

Yeah, the President is a civilian and it appears one of those that does not care for the office to which he has been elected to (except for lavish vacations that he suppresses from reporting), or the Country that flies the only flag of true Freedom.

Does not anyone remember what happened on 9/11, or any of the wars this country has participated in to help others achieve the freedoms we probably take for granted??

At the very least, one who is commander in chief of the Military of this Nation, should out of respect to the Office of commander in chief, Return the salute of those who are indeed, showing that same respect for this office...

All of the men and women who serve and have served in the Military are taught to look up to their superiors for counsel and leadership, and be ready to do what they say..

So, tell me, what kind of message is this man sending all the military and to all of those observing how he treats the military ???

Yeah, Dwight D Eisenhower didnt do it and he was kind of a dork too, and having been in the Military, he should have known better, right ?

I have served, and even if I had not, I would still show utmost respect for the Flag of this great nation and those who served, and those who put their lives on the line for it, and sometimes lost their lives, their families, their children for the cause..

Not condoning the lack luster salute, but the answer is quite simple. The President of the United States is a civilian. He is not a member of the US Military and is therefore not entitled to salute. The military salute is a privilege earned by honorable service in the military. It is also a privilege that can be taken away. Military prisoners are stripped of the privilege of saluting. While the President is Constitutionally the CINC, he is not a member of the military.

The practice to put the hand over the heart is for the pledge of allegiance. It is not for the national anthem...

The US Code (Titles 4 and 36) specifies four circumstances for rendering the hand-over-heart salute:

1. When the US flag is raised or lowered
2. When the US flag is carried past in a review or parade
3. When reciting the pledge of allegiance
4. When the national anthem is played

The saluter should face the flag in all cases. If the national anthem is played when the flag is not displayed, the saluter should face the source of the music.

It is also my understanding that it is appropriate when one swears an oath or seeks to tell the truth and wants witnesses to know his intent.
