Difference between meguires #7 and #2

I can't figure out what the difference between meguires 2 and 7 are, I have been uing #2 for a while but Im not sure if 7 is less abrassive or more abbrasive. Are both pure polish? Or does one have a cleaner in there also?

These two products are as different as two products can be. #2 is a fine cut compound made to be used with a rotary polisher for removing swirls, marring etc. #7 is a non abrasive glaze with some filling abilities used for getting a deep wet look.

You would use #2 to level the paint, than a finer abrasive to remove haze from #2 and improve gloss, than a glaze like #7 to get a wet deep look and than your wax on top of this.

Im not exactly sure what would be after #2 polish, other than the #7 glaze but thanks for the info on the difference. Stevet just so you know #2 is also a handpolish, at least it is now. I dont know if they make a formulation for rotory and hand polish, but it is a hand polish.

When you say #2 are you refering to #2 Fine Cut Cleaner or the second step of Meguiars 3 step system? #2 is definitely not a hand polish. The second step in the 3 step system is a hand polish and it is very similar to #7.

#2 will be in a tan bottle. The second step of the 3 step system is in a red bottle.

I was refering to the three step, I did not know that meguires had two products that had the same #. Which is also why i wanted to know what the difference was, because there did not seem to be much. Since I have you on the horn do you know anything about meguires #82 and #83? Would these be a good next step after using 2000 grit paper? Or should I use something else? Im trying to research it but the search function wont let me put in #83 as a search option.

#83 is Dual Action Cleaner Polish. #82 is Swirl Free Polish. #83 is more aggressive than #82. You would use #83 to try and remove 2000 grit sanding marks. Than follow up with #82. #83 and a PC might not be enough. You might need a rotary.

As for #7 and Megs second step in the 3 step system they are very similar. Both are non abrasive oily products desighned to give your paint the wet look. You can apply these as your second last step. Your last step being wax.

If #83 doesn't get out all the scratches what would you suggest a product a little more aggressive, I dont think I need to go to dimond cut, but I might need something with a litle more cut. The #83 buffed out really good with a finishing foam pad. but I still have "ghost" scratches from the wet sand paper, I can live with this but it would be nice to just get rid of it completely.

bildo4-I wouldn't use #84 except with a rotary, and then only if you have plenty of experience. I probably wouldn't try to remove 2,000 grit scratches with a PC/by hand; I do my wetsanding with 2,500 or 3,000 grit, which polishes up pretty easily with mild products. I guess the best answer might be to just do more work with the #83.

#2 Fine Cut Cleaner is in the Professional Line originally intended for rotary use only to remove mild swirls, scratches and other defects (I've heard the formulation has changed but I'm not sure).

The Step 2 Polish is in the Consumer Line and like the others mentioned non-abrasive. Its primary use is adding to the depth and 'wetness' of the finish before waxing

well after i have evaluated the area I did, I guess I am happy with it. The paint was not good to begin with and I think maybe my expectations are a little to high. I just keep looking at some of these flawless paintjobs on show cars and think, just polish a little more and I can get it like that, but the truth is you do really need to start with a good enough paint job to get it to that level. right now the spot I did looks 10x better than the rest of the car, so i should be happy with that. Thanks for the tips guys

The consumer line's "Step 2 Deep Crystal Polish" has never been referred to as "#2", by anyone. So no there are not two products with the same number.

#2 Fine Cut Cleaner:

Step 2 Polish:

The product number for the Step 2 polish is A-2116, which would make it technically #21, however strangely enough Meguiar's has assigned the number 21 to its new Synthetic Sealant.
