ive been reading and reading.....and im wondering what the difference is between compounding and polishing...compounding seems like more aggressive work for crappier paint, which ill probably never have to deal with. any of the cars ill do are new or failry new, with light-medium swirling and scratching. i was hoping id be fine with ssr2 and optimum polish...not sure what pad yet though.

am i on the right track somewhat?

Sure are Tommy. Compounding generally involves more aggressive products and pads to remove heavier or more concentrated damage. It requires polishing afterwards to remove what some call hazing or marring, induced by the more agressive products. Polishing generally consists of medium grade or light grade abrasives and pads, which remove more common everyday swirls and paint surface damage. SSR 2 and Optimum are considered polishes for most everyday situations. Each of those makers, makes something heavier, SSR 3 could be considered a compound, and Optimum makes a Optimum Compound.

arite..thats what i thought. i shouldnt see any horrible cars anytime soon...and im sure that the worst of the cars i may detail can be finished with a coarse pad and an aggresive polish.
