Did I apply opti-coat correctly? (PICS)

It doesnt look like the rain is beading how it should be. It has been 3 days since the application. I think i used ALOT less than what Chris at Optimum's video shows. I followed Rasky's video

These were my prep steps:

1. ONR wash

2. Clay

3. Light polish

4. IPA wipe to check for correction

5. ONR wash to remove polish dust

6. IPA wipe again

7. Opti-Coat 2.0 (rasky's technique)

That does seem a bit "dull" on the beading. How many CC's to you use?

I really only use Opti-Guard and I've found the OC 2.0 to be much more forgiving with the drying time.

I just shot a qucik video of the beading on my new car last week for someone...OC doesn't bead like a wax or sealant, but it shouldn't be flat like your pics either.

Opti Guard beading 2012 TSX SE - YouTube

I average about 7-8cc on a car using OG. I can see it as it goes on, especially on darker colors.

Boston, I've been in the same place - - I don't think you are applying enough product. I find that I've got to apply more than what seems like an appropriate amount. When it's done right, it beads big time :)

I used 5 cc on the paint and windows except windshield. This is on a 2005 Corolla. I should add that there was some dust on the car accumulated over 2 days from neighbors cutting the grass. But it has been raining all day. I think it should have washed off. I guess i'll wait until I wash it to see.

How long did you wait until you washed the car? I go several days with 2.0 and let the sun really cure it well before a wash.

Cheers,

GREG

As was said... you have some beading, but it is a bit odd looking so maybe you indeed didn't apply enough to the car. The good news is a light polish and reapplication should be all you need to get it to where it needs to be, so I wouldn't worry about it to much. (I would wait the full 30 days that optimum says for it to fully cure I think it is).

Someone else can correct me if i'm wrong on that though.

I actually do have a question however for some of you who have OC'd a lot of cars. Do some paints just really soak it up? I used about 10-15 CC's on mine... the applicator would dry completely out on me so I had to keep adding more.

That beadings looks terrible. I hope you won't have to rebuff the whole car again to reapply it? I don't think you can just apply another layer, but not sure.

I believe you can apply a second coat of OptGuard or OptiCoat within the first 30 days without polishing the surface. After 30 days it has to be lightly polished before adding the second coat. Check with Chris at Optimum for a difinitive answer.

Actually yes I believe you are correct. The new OC2 that has been out for a while now can be applied over itself. It's a silver car OP, so it's easy to miss where it's getting enough... or getting any at all so just try to make the lighting the best for the situation and put more on! You are good for 30 days and this was Chris' words (from optimum).

If there is any sap along with whatever else is on the car, that can affect how the paint beads when it rains. If it hasn't rained hard, it might not have knocked it all off.

Scott, do you think that using menzerna's 4500 grit (I know you don't use Menzerna much or at all) would be enough to rough the paint up so that I could apply a second layer of OC over mine? Or would a 2000 and then the 4500 to jewel the paint a bit more would be better?

You might have some bonding issues using Menzerna..why not use Optimum Polish II=no bonding issues with OC.

Well that's news to me and must be an update from the original? I coated a boat a few years back and the customer was concerned that there wasn't enough coating on the surface. I asked Dr. G about applying another coat (within a week of original application) and he said not to because it could cause discoloration of the previous layer. I'd have to repolish for it to properly bond. Good to know there is a fix!

It has been that way for a while now for both OC2.0 and OG; they updated something with the resin binder and it is now layerable.

That's what Chris said recently.

well because I don't have any optimum polish and I don't want to buy more polish when I have a lot already. Why would there be bonding issues if I do an IPA wipedown and so forth?

You should be fine. After repolishing, just give it an Alcohol wipe down and then a Dawn bath and you'll be good to go.

I may polish it all off and go with Hardbody... having something that keeps it's slickness is nice IMO.
