detailing fresh paint?

Hey all, I should be getting my car back by the end of next week. It was completely re-painted. The body shop said to wait 60 days before waxing, but I just wanted to make sure that that is correct. I'm looking forward to seeing it glow from Zaino again.:bounce

Listen only to your painter. Only they know exactly how the car was painted. Direction from anyone else is pure speculation - we didn't paint your car.

Yeep .. what he^^^^^^ said. Anything sooner you may or may not mess up the paint and if you do ... the painter may walk away from any responsibility.

Agree that you should check with the painter, but also see if they shop has a spray booth oven. If they do not, then i would wait more then 60 days.

If you have to do something to the paint , can i suggest washing it with good clean water and very little car soap, offen. And wait .wait ,wait.Tthe guy who painted sounds like he know's what he's talking about.

You can safely use #00 Hi-Tech Wash on fresh paint, it's body shop safe, i.e. it safe for fresh paint.

Better to use something that adds Lubricity to the water than nothing at all.

Yeah I was wondering about car washes. I'll be driving the car possibly in snow soon, and that means road salt. I don't want to let that sit too long on a car with no protection. How frequently can I wash a car with a fresh paint job? I figure I'll just wash it often until I can wax it.

Meguiar's #80 Speed Glaze contains a Paintable Polymer which is a paint protectant, albeit a mild one. I don't know of any other company that offers a synthetic polymer for protecting paint that is also safe to use on fresh paint... AND in a fresh paint environment, i.e. you can use this product in paint shops without the fear of contaminating the shop.

It can be applied by hand, PC, or rotary. It does have some cutting action, but if you apply it by hand or PC it is fairy limited.

(By that I mean you won't see any thing happening to your paint, it pretty much relies on the direct drive action of a rotary buffer to make it work)

It will create a deep, dark wet-looking finish however.

FYI

Final polish can be used on fresh paint, just about all the body shops i know use it. I tried the speed glaze, it kept caking up on the pad. Still need to try more of it out.

Ok I talked to the painter, they do use a spray booth oven, but he said since it's a black car that I should wait longer than 60 days to wax it. I still don't know how much longer that is. I guess I'll find that out tomorrow when I pick it up.

Ok I got the car back. It's funny, the shop stole my 2004 sticker off my liscense plate, so on the way home I got a $350 ticket for having out of date registration, and another $350 dollar ticket for not having my insurance with me. The latter is my fault for forgetting it. Anyways, I hope to get this corrected and dropped.

So... on to the quality of the work. It's ok, not great but not bad. It looks stock, the orange peel looks stock. However I can't tell if there's any blemishes because it's dirty from getting rained on, so I have to wash it today or tomorrow to better inspect it.

I talked to the painter and he said don't wax it for atleast 60 days. He said since it's a black car, it might be a good idea to wait longer than 60 days, but he didn't tell me how longer. Any idea from you guys how much longer I should wait  ? I was thinking about waiting three months.

I am happy that the swirls are gone, or atleast they appear to be.... we'll see once I wash the dirt off.

May I ask why you got an almost brand new car totally repainted?

I have a 83 VW Scirocco that still looks damn fine with its original paint.

I just hear no paint job (well no paint job that an average consumer will pay for) can match a factory paint job.

Quickstrike, I got a 3 year car totally repainted because it was scratched on every panel from a tree falling on it. Not to mention that before that a Honda dealership heavily scratched my entire car by cleaning it with dirty water from a bucket and rags. So I figured what the heck, might as well pay to have a couple other panels repainted and have the whole car fixed.

I love Speed Glaze! It's stronger than #9 but much less than DACP. I use it often with a PC and polish pad on cars that have light swirls and scratches. I like it on darker cars.

In fact, I used it on speed 6 with a polish pad and removed rotary swirls.

It's not often mentioned here, but I find it to be wonderful!

How long should I wait to apply Zaino? The painter said that if I detail it too early that the paint could get cloudy.

Eek I see more swirls, I'm kinda ticked off by this body shop, which is supposidly the best in my area:o. I'm praying to the car gods that the swirls are in the clearcoat so I can fix this.

, I brought the car in the sun and OMG the entire car has swirls all over it. It looks like from sanding the paint. The damage from the tree is fixed atleast, but omg there is swirls on every piece of the car. I seriously doubt they'll fix it for free either, I'm not sure I want to f*ck with this anymore. I'm tempted to just say enoug is enough and throw in the towel.:nixweiss
