Detailing challenge: Someone hotglued an emblem on their car, wants it off.

Ok,

2002 Ford Focus. Someone before the current owner, hotglued an emblem , the letter "S" on their trunk lid, next to the license plate. I can tell it is a glue as it squeezed out around the letter.

The glue is a gold/dark gold/amber color.

Can I get suggestions on how to remove? I am thinking I don't want to pry it off, as there is clearcoat and paint underneath.

Is trying to turn it into a jelly or dissolve it the best attack? It is pretty flat against the paint surface but does have two edges where the glue didn't squeeze out..

Is dissolving it is the thought, recommend a solvent? Looks like hot glue to me, not sure.

I was thinking nail polish remover? (not sure about that), Goo-gone, heating it with a hair dryer, wd-40, etc?

The emblem (letter) is plastic with silver finish.

thanks for any ideas..

hairdryer is the best bet, or just leave it out in direct sunlight for a few hours, if you have some nice hot weather.

Probably no way to get behind it, had thought of thread, might still try that.. Will try the hairdryer for sure. I know, least aggressive first. Wish I knew exactly what it was, but does look like a glue instead of epoxy though.

Do mineral spirits dissolve any sorts of glues, or is that more for paint overspray?

Try a heat gun like stated above. It works wonders. I used it to remove the E off of the back of our buick. It used to say GSE, but now it says GSX.

Use a hair dreyer to get the glue nice and hot then, try the fishing line to get the emblem and most of the glue off. Then use the hair dryer again to re-heat the glue and try peeling it off.

If this is the same type of hot glue that my wife uses you should be able to lift one corner and then peel it off like a sticker.

Another option would be to freeze it. Hot glue doesn't like cold. Find one of those compressed air cans for cleaning your computer leyboard...turn it upside down and spray the emblem. What will come out is very cold and will freeze the area in just a few seconds. Grab the emblem and pull quickly...should pop right off.

Try a hair dryer when the glue gets really hot slip dental floss behind if slowly work the dental floss down untill the emblem comes off.Dental floss will not hurt your car
