Detailing business ideas

I was wondering if anybody has ever tried this-

Over the last few months, word has been getting around where I work that I enjoy detailing. Ive had a few friends/coworkers bring there cars to my house and we spend 3-4 hours detailing. I always ask them to bring the car clean so that we don't have to wash it first. I then show them how to do a 1-step process-

Clay-I show them how to use it, what it does, the Baggie test, etc. and then we each do half the car.

Clean/polish/seal with XMT360 or GPS-I show them the DA, explain why it is different than a rotary or the orbital buffer that they have in there garage. I let the do 1/4 of the hood to get a feel of it and then take over. I use the DA, they buff behind me with a microfiber.

Then we do an ONR wash so they can see the right way to maintain the finish-2 buckets, correct wash media, proper washing technique, guzzler microfiber to dry.

So the question is, can this work as a business model? Teaching people how to properly maintain their vehicles appearance.

I have additional details that I would include but I wanted to keep it simple for this description.

Any input or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

There is a company (Detail King, among others) who use this buisness model by holding training classes and selling products.

So yes it can work

Not wanting to hijhack your thread but I have been considering something similar and was wondering about having open house with groups of DIY car guys as well as full blown detail school.

I have been in the high end detailing business for 20 plus years and the first 13 was for Mercedes Benz where I was the shop mgr and trainer. During those years I trained alot of detailers, some with prior experience and some that were 100% green. Throughout the training I learned methods of instruction that made it easier for the student to absorb the info.

Recently I have started thinking about starting a detailer training course in Spokane Wa and I just wanted to get some advice from those of you that have taken classes or have knowledge of what it requires and the prices...

How long do the training courses typically run?

Are most of the students learning the trade for personal gain or are they folks from dealerships or detail shops looking to further their knowledge?

How much does a typical detail school cost to attend?

Have any of you added training to an existing detail business? My intentions are to continue my detailing business and offer detail training during the slow winter months.

thanks for the advice

I also recently posted about wanting to do something similar. My focus would be more geared toward teaching people proper maintenance. I have quite a few customers who could use a crash course on proper washing and drying. Trying to keep it informal and just a place for people to get together and try out different products before ordering. I think people often would rather go hang out with friends than spend an hour washing and waxing their car, so why not combine the two?

I think it's very plausible. I have had requests to hold a class even with people willing to pay a fee for some take home products and my time.

These are all DIY people that still bring it in once a year for a thorough detail.

I thought of having food and drink available during a break.

Maybe a schedule like this..

First 2 hr proper washing and interior maintenance.

Break

Second 2 hr. Basic polishing(maintenance) and LSP's
