Detailing and clear coat..

Hi everyone..

I own a BMW 3 series 2009 and was wondering if anyone here knows the thickness of the clear coat in units (like meters) on these cars? What is usually the thickness of clear coat, generally speaking on cars? Is there a standard-defined thickness or it depends on the manufacture (like BMW, Infiniti, Lexus, Honda etc..) who define the thickness?

How many times can I detail to have no clear coat left over?

Thanks!

simply put . . . . all manufacturers clear coats and paint are different. Each car will vary on a few factors.

As for detailing. You can detail your car as often as you want, the thing that will determine how many times you can have "paint correction" done to your vehicle or serious compounding and polishing will be determined upon what methods are used to upkeep it.

One section of your car could be badly swirled, marred or have serious holograms and that section could need a heavier polish which will in turn shave a tiny bit of clear off that one particular section.

Hope that helps. Just remember, no two cars are the same

The problem comes from excessive abrasive polishing.

Note that it's not a matter of going through the clear; you can only take off so much before you thin it too much and thus compromise its UV resistance; that precipitates failure and/or fading/etc. of the basecoat.

Somebody here with an ETG should be able to measure an '09 BMW and extrapolate from the overall paint thickness (so much is primer, so much is basecoat, so much is clear).

Don't mar it up much and you won't have to polish it much and everything will be fine :D Heh heh, easy to say, hard to do...it all boils down to washing correctly.
