A friend of mine just gave me a package of these all purpose terry towels. The package reads 100% cotton. I have never done a burn test, so i decided i'd try it on these...

I pulled a few strands off the towel, and lit it with a lighter....After the flame caught and went out, i was left with a blackish/some greyish ash. I rubbed it with my finger and did NOT feel and clumps. Im assuming i did this right, any comments as to this method or anyone used these towels? I was planning to use them to apply my Megs #9, ( i have swirls ) as i would like to save my Royal Velvets for other duties..

They were bought at Checkers Auto, a local autoparts chain store.....

From what I've seen and read, pure cotton leaves a mostly grey ash with little black in it, and it's very light and whispy, with no solid dark "stick" left in the center. Also a brown/amber coloured residue is often left on the surface where it burned (I use a chunk of tinfoil). I usually don't even have to touch it to know it failed.

And yeah, it can smell funny too. :p

What did it smell like when you burned the threads?

I'll have to get back to you on this question...i didn't smell it, but i can retry the burn test and post the "smell" results. What should i be looking for in terms of smell..??? I also did not test the RV's that i have, i'll have to make a comparison to see what i get...

Well i did the burn test again...on the RV's and the DARRA's, with similar results. I noticed when the flame went out, just below where it burnt on the strand, there was a brownish color. No black clumps. The smell was like, the best i can describe it was newspaper burning smell. I also compared the towels side by side, the RV's looked like they where tighter wolven than the Darras..more strands per square inch..I might be doing this wrong, do i just pull strands out or cut a square and burn...

Anybody..?
