D151 Durability

Mr Ron K,

Glad you are back. You are a great source of technical info.:D

Here is my question about 303 aerospace protectant: I would like to augment the sheen of my canvas top, is it possible to apply a coat of 303 to a canvas top of a complete garage queen? Will there be any harm caused by this application to the material (GM canvas)? The top is in perfect condition with little or no fading or decrease in water repellancy. Thanks in advance.

The 303 is similar to our Fab Gard, it is a resin product, not a dimethal fluid like ScotchGard.

This resin requires the use of hydrocarbon solvent as the carrier to the surface. That is the odor some complain about, but there is no way around it and still get maximum performance of the product.

Added sheen on a fabric top? If so, will only be short term, as once the solvents evaporate and resin cures, should look the same as when you started.

This type of product is not intended to change the apperance, but to maintain the factory apperance, while providing a protective barrier against most liquids that could stain the fabric.

I always recommend that when an owner or detailer cleans a fabric top more than once with a cleaner, to reapply a resin/solvent product to replace the original coating that is naturally removed during the cleaning process.

These products provide water proofing to the fabric as well as the anti-stain qualities.

Hope this answers some of your questions.

I appreciate the rapid and informative response. I should also clarify that I was questioning the usage of the 303 Vinyl and leather Protectant on a canvas top as an augmenter of the top's sheen. What are your thoughts about the use of this product in this case ( 303 vinyl/leather protectant on GM canvas top)? Good/ Bad? Material damage?

I would not recommend that!

I believe you would find a couple of real negatives by doing so.

The top would start to show discoloring after a period of time and second, it would be a dust magnet.

Not recommended.

Hey guys, just curious what people are generally seeing with D151 as far as durability goes, and also the general method for removal.

I usually polish and wipe, and end up with pretty poor durability, so I was wondering if I should wait a little while and let the residue set up like a wax. How are you guys doing it?

On a side note, this Big Kahuna contest is awesome. It's like free reign to post-whore it up. Senior member status, here I come!

I have used a ton of DG products but have not tried 151. I have used 111 and 105. 105 is my favourite for protection and ease of use. If you top it with Colli 845, you have a bulletproof finish!

I meant Megs D151, their all-in-one product. I do like 105 and 845, but I've never used them together. After reading about your 601/501 and 601/105 cocktails, I'm anxious to give those a try. But IIRC, you apply both by hand, right?

After wiping off the D151, you can quickly go back over the car with Optimum Car Wax.... Not much effort and increase in durability...

True. OCW is just delicious. Easy to use, looks great, lasts a while for a spray and smells like pina coladas. Still unsure whether I prefer OCW or AW, but I guess either could work to bump up 151 a bit.

Usually, yes, but this summer I got carpal tunnel so I was doing them with the DA.
