The Institute's series of four bumper tests includes front- and rear-into-flat-barrier plus front-into-angle-barrier and rear-into-pole. These tests assess how well bumpers can prevent damage in 5 mph collisions simulating the fender-bender impacts that are common in commuter traffic and parking lots. A good bumper system should absorb the energy of these minor impacts and protect expensive body panels, headlamp systems, and other components from damage.
Acura TSX and Chevrolet Malibu are worst: The TSX sustained the heaviest damage in the rear-into-pole test because the bumper was too weak to protect the car body.

"The manufacturers of these SUVs try to create a rough-and-tough image for them, but their bumpers are flimsy," says Adrian Lund, the Institute's chief operating officer. "Vehicles shouldn't sustain major damage in a minor collision at a fast walking speed."

I've long maintained that cars should be made out of superball material. This way, in an accident, no damage would be done and no one would likely be hurt very seriously.

There is one slight drawback though... it could take a very long time for the vehicles to come to a complete stop, and by the time they do, you could be in an entirely different county! :)

Now that I think about it, you could also be arrested for leaving the scene of an accident! :)
