Corvette + cyclo = getting my *** kicked

My normal cyclo regime is green/Meguiar83, green/Meguiar80 (if needed, white/Meguiar80), wax.

This works great for my g35 and viper, and on my dad's i30.

However, my z06 is kicking my ***. I spent an hour+ on the trunk with green/83, and took out, maybe, 5% of the marks.

I was hesitant to try orange/83 (when i used it on my g35 it left some funny marring that took forever to remove), but figured why the heck not. Did a small test spot and it came out flawless. Did my entire trunk in 10minutes and it took out 95% of the marks.

So I guess my question is 2 fold

1) Because the corvette has such a hard clear (and the others have soft ones), is it possible that my orange/83 combo is the same as, say, a green/83 on a much softer clear?

2) Orange/83 took out 95% of the marks. Not matter how I looked at it I could not find any swirls left by it (as opposed to on my g35, where i could see left-over marks from green/83, that were taken out by green/80). Is there anypoint in following up with green/83 and green/80, or is it ossible the clear is so hard that orange/83 finishes it off and I can go right to waxing?

1. Yes.

2. Just because the finish looks free of defects and shiny doesn't mean it has hit it's maximum gloss potential. You could go straight to wax as long as you're happy with the defect removal, but before you do, give a good glossing polish (like Menz PO85RD, which is rated for hard clear coats) a try with a zero bite pad. You may be very glad you did. :)

Thanks for putting my mind at rease! As a result of my last relatively poor experiences with the orange pads (again, on really soft clear) I was scarred shitless to use them on the entire car, heh.

You're welcome. :)

Corvettes are just such beautiful cars.... Seeing a properly detailed one driving down the street is more prone to make me run off the road than seeing a hitch hiking hottie.

efnfast- Glad you found a combo that works on the marring. I can pretty much guarantee that you'll notice an improvement if you do a follow-up with a milder combo though, orange pads just won't give the level of gloss that milder pads will. You won't appreciate the difference until you do it (perhaps more than once) but when you *do* notice the improvement you'll see what we're talking about.

Heh heh, surprised the cyber-nannies didn't asterisk out a word on your last post :D

Cyclo + orange pads are pretty much your starting point on Corvette paint. I've been through the same thing several times before I switched to the rotary.

I'd definitely follow 83/orange with 80/white or green before waxing to get the best gloss.

I definitely see what you guys are talking about - after hitting it with orange/83 I did green/80 and it really made it pop even more. Following up with waxing now. Paint is definitely popping and looks outstanding. Thanks :waxing:

I was left with a few marks in the clearcoat (almost look like scratches, except they're in the clearcoat and not down in the paint) that I could not take out. Didn't matter how hard I pushed or how long I can my cyclo, just couldn't get them out.

I figure since the z06 has such a hard clear I'm pretty much stuck with them unless I wanted to get super abrasive or use a rotary?

If you have access to a PC you could use the 3.5" LC PFW pads with something like 1Z pasta Intensiv. It'll work a *LOT* better than the #83/orange via Cyclo (that's the sort of thing you *follow* the 3.5" PFW/1Z combo with to remove the micro-marring). And FWIW, I wouldn't categorize that as "super abrasive". Much safer than foam pads on a rotary too.

Just recently bought the Einszett polishes (HG and PI), not yet used the PI, but if like Menz PowerGloss or 3M's Fast Cut Plus, you'll find it and the orange pad are a good combo for hard clears like the VAG, BMW, and MB Ceramiclear, where you need a fair bit of bite or to remove a few deeper defects.

In fact, S1X/Mark V Mystique on either yellow with normal-softer paint can get 100% correction and quite often 100% LSP readiness. So don't rule them out, and they do work as designed in the dual pad density & 1 product approach they're known for.
