Decided that I'd go with rd_volvo's advice and try Collinite's "heavy duty" Insulator Wax on the OEM painted alloy wheels on the WRX. Found a recommendation for Wax Bytes on an Audi or VW forum and purchased same for just under $18 shipped (proprietor Mark Tyler e-mailed an order confirmation then later a UPS tracking number - very fast and a very positive experience for such a small transaction). Above 65 degrees this stuff is a heavy liquid and tends to clump at temps under that. I applied a single coat, using a dry terry/foam applicator to the four wheels today and found nothing remarkable or unusual there. It tends to make little pieces of surface crap disappear but I didn't sense that it accomplished this through abrasion. Throughout I could smell something very close to mineral spirits about it. When I finished I noticed "contains petroleum distillate" and "caution: combustible mixture" messages. Very little effort needed to remove it once dry with cotton terry and I didn't find any evidence of white "stuff" in crevices (but on silver paint, this sort of thing doesn't jump out at you like it might on black or red).
I'll provide a final follow-up when it finally goes away. The WRX dusts its wheels very little but the rotors surface rust of course and that does run and settle on wheel surfaces though. Thanks for the tip, RD.
