Cola and Aluminum Foil

The "Mythbusters" just tested the use of cola and al foil to remove rust and grime for a chrome bumper against the "leading metal polish" and the cola did a better job. Why?

It's right in the ingredients. IIRC, you can use Coke for cleaning your toilet, taking the paint off of your car, and dissolving bones and teeth.

Dissolving teeth = BUSTED

Degreaser = BUSTED

I'd like to add that some Univ did a study on how corrosive sodas are to your teeth, and the ones with flavors like lemon and lime were the worst. Root beer scored the best in terms of not slowly eating away at your enamel.

I like root beer, actually.

Yeah, my dentist has a list in his office...the sports drinks and lemonades are the worst, Coke was actually pretty benign in comparison.

If you're saying they tried to stick teeth in coke to see if they dissolve and were unsucessful, well it's because that's not the way coke dissolves your teeth. Coke causes an internal overload of phosphorous(phosphoric acid), which in order to be purged from you system needs calcium and/or magnesium. Now since most people consume way to much calcium in relation to magnesium, your body is usually already deficient in magnesium(magnesium is the first mineral used by the body to help remove excess calcium from the blood, when available magnesium is depleted, the body moves onto other minerals), and so the only mineral left to use to help purge the phosphorus is calcium. When your body needs to adjust it's Ph or needs to start taking minerals(due to deficiencies somewhere in the diet) it does so by first going to the mouth. The saliva in your mouth then carries the calcium away from your teeth and takes it to wherever the body needs it. Therefore, coke, causes your teeth to slowly erode by overloading the body with phosphorus.

Interesting fact, your teeth are in constant states of demineralising, and remineralising. Magnesium is the chief element used in the remineralisation process, and calcium is the chief mineral used in natural cavity filling(this only happens when all minerals in the body are in perfect or close to perfect balance, and is rarely seen in developed countries, however, it is quite common in hunter gatherer societies whose chief food source is none other than meat).

Funny thread. Yes, Coke has always been great at removing rust and - get this - corrosion from battery cables. In a torrential storm, a gas station attendant wiped some Coca-Cola on my dad's windshield, and the wiper blades swept the water away cleanly. It's sorta like using Rain-X today. This was back in 1970 or so.

BTW, Coke is my favorite cola.

Are you saying that hunter-gatherers have good mineral balance because their chief food source is meat? Or because it isn't meat?

I guess I should've said phosphorous rich meat :) Of course the rest of the food they eat typically has a much better magnesium:calcium ratio, and they aren't cosuming empty calories that leach other vitamins and minerals from the body.

Damn, I was trying to only drink water and gatorade, and cut out sodas of my diet completely. Looks like the only "safe bet" is pure water these days, unfortunately I'm not a big fan of it.
