CMC Detailing-06 Mercedes E350 correction

I had first seen this car last year after it had been "detailed" by another local shop. At the time, it was shiny and black...but still had some light holograms poking through. Some time had passed and those light holograms became less and less "light" so the client contacted me to come in and finally make his black car look right again. Surprisingly, after a year had passed, I still found TONS of compound residue in every conceivable area of the car.

I grabbed a few before pics, but was ready to jump into it so a lot of them didn't come out too well.

One issue I ran into was the wheel barrels. They probably have never been cleaned since the car was purchased, and laughed off everything I threw at them. I started with Sonax, then moved to Brown Royal 1:1 and finally Meguiar's Wheel Brightener 4:1. When WB didn't make a dent, I just had to cut my losses and move on.

Not a huge improvement.

The car was foamed with Meguiar's Shampoo Plus, then pressure-washed off and brought inside to ONR wash and clay it. This was from behind the license plate, easily the dirtiest part of this car. Other than that, the car was pretty contaminant-free.

Correction consisted of a MF pad primed with D300, compounded with original version M105. Finishing was done with a B&S green pad with Menz 106fa. Machines used were a GG6 DA and Meg's G110. Most of the paint was healthy, save for the driver side fender which was very low. The following pictures are after compounding, before final polishing.

The following day, David Strum (aka weekendwarrior) came by and offered to lend a hand finishing up the car. Anyone who has met David will agree that not only is he a great detailer, he's also an all-around great guy and good friend. I'm always glad to get a chance to work with him. While I continued compounding the last remaining panels, David got to work finishing the paint. Afterward, we foamed the car with CG CWC (with some remaining Shampoo +, that's why the bottle looks blue!) and applied Meguiar's 26 liquid to the paint. Tires and wheel wells got Hyper-dressing 3:1.

Thanks for looking!

Awesome work, Mike! That leftover compound looked like a nightmare.

For the wheel barrels, did you contemplate removing the wheels at all? If you had, perhaps a stronger acid cleaner would have done the trick....

Nice job mike. How much time did you spend removing the year old compound? Looks like it was EVERYWHERE.
Thanks Chris. Doing wheels, wells, tires and chasing all that crap with OPC, a brush and a foam gun took roughly 3 hours. I left the wheels dwelling while I went after that gunked up residue.

Thanks Charlie! I'm sure that wheels-off, a stronger acid would have cleaned them up, maybe even polishing the hell out of them with 105 and a sacrificial pad. WB is where I draw the line in what I'm personally comfortable working with, and even then it's a last resort. But I know Barry T. has mentioned some Ardex products that make WB look like water though!

Great work Mike! Benz black is a B*TCH to work on, and you made it look brand new! Awesome job!
Thanks Dave, I know you've seen a few black Benz's. BTW, your reviews are great, I've been reading through those lately.

removing the wheels is the only way to get them clean.....it sucks but what can u do..

Agreed, but for this car it wasn't going to happen. Like I said to Charlie, after researching WB, I hate reaching for it. If I had a dedicated shop, I would consider something stronger, but for now I'm not comfortable having anything heavier duty in my house. Thanks!

Great work on the E350 there Mike, yes David is on heck of a guy and I'm glad to have met him 2 yrs ago. Road trip should be in order for your guy's and Chris to come down to DF next year. :bigups

The wheels looked pretty good in the pics. It is not many write ups where you mention the lack of complete success in a certain area. Thanks.

That turned out real nice. Did the owner notice all of that old compound before you started? Also, i'm curious as to why you used two different DA's.

Great job Mike!
Thanks Todd!

nice job Mike. You have to love that left over compound.
Thanks Chad. I couldn't believe it was still packed in all around the car over a year later.:D

Thanks Angelo! Actually, the 3 of us have talked about taking that trip soon, and maybe we can convince Sal329 to go too. Have a strong NC/SC showing!

Thanks Al. There's no point trying to gloss(haha) over things you can't fix, right? Better to be honest about it.

Thank you. In all honesty, we used 3 DA's. I was compounding with my new G110 with 5.5" pads, Dave was using my GG6 to finish polish with a 6.5" pad and my old, soon to be sold, 110 was set up with a 3.5" MF pad for the mirrors, bumpers and other tight spots.

Nice job, it really came out well.
Thanks!

Very very nice work!
Thank you Dave!
