Cleaning and treating vinyl convertible top

My brother has a 1998 mustang gt, and the tan top is starting, after 11 years, to get line of black on it. I am not sure what it is. It usually happens after the top is put back up.



I have been using 303, and I am not getting the results I would like. suggestions?

Raggtop Vinyl protectant is what use on convertable tops.

I've basically got the same car, as you can see in my avatar. My tan top developed black lines also, I think its tarnish from the metal ribs. Use any specialty vinyl cleaner or soap and a brush. You can be aggressive with a brush too. Scrubbing won't rip vinyl and you can't scratch it. They do come off with a little effort. Vinyl protectant is good for the vinyl, but it won't prevent the rib lines from reappearing.

Meguiar's Marine line has products made for vinyl tops and canvas tops. I haven't needed to use the cleaner yet, but the sealant worked great on the Porsche and 350Z convertibles I used it on.

It may be of help too you. Foy the black bleeding through the top, you can reduce this by placing vinyl lettering material between the ribs and the top material.
