Chrome Luggage Rack ?

I have a factory chrome luggage rack on my 1977 Corvette. The chrome is in very good shape except for 2 of the vertical bars. (There are a total of 8 vertical bars). Those 2 are just not as shiney as the other bars. When I use chrome polish on those 2 bars I get dark black residue on my applicator pad. This only happens on the 2 bars that are NOT as shiney!



Should I continue to use chrome polish on those 2 bars to get the entire rack looking good or am I actually making it worse? Is that black residue the chrome actually coming off of those 2 bars?

Sounds like the 2 bars that are giving off black residue aren't chrome? Chrome doesn't typically do that. If that's true, then try a dedicated alloy polish to give it a chrome-like shine.
 
I am using Mother's Chrome Polish on the luggage rack. Is that a dedicated alloy polish? If not, what would be a better product to buy?
