Certification

I received a call yesterday from a young man who asked where he could get a certification for detailing... I recommended several schools but that was not helpful enough he wanted a detailing certification immediately. He said he could get a job at a dealership if he had a detailing certification.



I asked him if he had ever detailed in a professional environment he said ... I detail my friends vehicles and I am very good...so I asked him how was he going to detail dealership vehicles, produce recon work, correct problems, and do volume work without the requisite experience. I said if the dealership is going to pay you 18.00 per hour do you not think they have some expectations of you to produce work? ... Have you thought about working as a trainee first and then working your way up as you gain more experience or finding a good shop to work where you can gain some experience before applying for that position...



Needless to say he hung up the phone not very happy with my suggestions.... I had to chuckle... he has no idea what he is in for.
 
Send him my way, I've got a printer and some fancy paper. $100 and he's good to go.

I'm my 20+ years of doing this I've never once heard of a dealership asking for some sort of detailing certification!?! LOL, My first interview consisted of taking a car and showing the owner what I could do...
 
Whoa $18 an hour.......sign me up!!



You're post is proof that no matter what profession we're in, you'll always have someone out there that thinks they're the bees knees just because they've done something once or twice....heck there are plenty out there WITH the time and experience who somehow, someway manage to fly under the radar reeking of incompetence!



Doing a car here and there is one thing, spitting out shine on several cars a day and then some.....better eat your Wheaties and Drink your RedBull son! A certificate to me means nothing more then you sat thru class and hopefully ingested AND retained some of the info that was thrown at you. Proofs in the pudding, work it like your life depends on it because the older you get the more you WILL depend on it!

When somebody wants certification without putting in the requisite work to attain competence in the field, well...that pretty much speaks for itself. That young man has a lot to learn, and not just about detailing.
