CD Test and MF Towels...WHY?

Can someone offer some info as to why some/most MF towels scratch a CD and a few/handful do not scratch a CD?

I CD test by rinsing the CD with water, blot dry it, spray Meguiar's FI and rub 25 times with a MF. In my tests, most CD's get scratched or micro-marred. But, some MF do not inflict any damage whatsoever even with 50 rubs.

Why the discrepancy?

IMO the CD test is BS. I have never tested anything that didn't scratch a CD. Just like your car different light will show different defects on a CD. I have tested a MF towel and thought it passed under normal lighting like you would have in your kitchen. Then I looked under a different light and there was marring.

I can always see marring on a CD if I hold a flashlight off to the side and shine the light across the surface of the CD.

I agree somewhat, but there needs to be a baseline for safety reasons.....If you can scratch a CD with a MF, using the same pressure used while removing a product, chances are your going to have similiar results with your cars surface, i wouldnt say to the same degree....IMO, for the test to be accurate, it needs to be applied in the same manner as one would with there detailing process......when i polish or seal, wax, remove etc.....I dont make 20-30 passes....This CD testing has gotten out of hand, however it can reveal the potential for dissapointing results if done appropriately....

I agree with stevet, thhe CD test is very deceiving. For instance, will you really rub one spot on your car 25 or 50 times? No, and you don't use much pressure either.

The surface of a CD is much softer than a car so look at it this way: if the towel does not scratch then you know you are safe, if the towel scratches the CD a little then you know it will scratch CDs but it may still be perfectly safe for your car.

Why don't you do what I do, I went to the local body shop and they gave me a black door panel for free from a wreck. I keep it handy to use for testing.

What DFTowel said :xyxthumbs Especially about getting a black panel if you really want to know what is/isn't safe. If you have a buddy who works at the shop, get it painted with black lacquer (no clearcoat) so it's a bit softer than the average (newer) car.
