carnuaba wax comparisons

cwcad

New Normal
Had a chance to test some carnauba waxes on the hood of my truck this past Saturday. Spent about six hours or preparation and application for the whole process. I must say that the Menzerna line of products(po85rd and 1066ff) are terrific!

Here is the prep process:

SSR2.5 orange Propel pad
PO1066ff yellow Propel pad
PO85RD green Propel pad

Once completing this I sectioned off the hood with blue painters tape into four equal squares. I used my wife as the blind tester. Then proceeded to apply a different coat of carnauba wax to each one of the four squares.

WAXES APPLIED

Mother’s Carnauba
P21S
Pinnacle Souveran
Zymol Vintage Estate

I placed a thin layer on each square and wiped each one off. Then I proceeded to apply a spit shine method of application times three. I had my wife come in an look at the products taped off each time it was buffed off. The results in my humble test were surprising to say the least.

The winner hands down was P21S. It had the shine, depth, and clarity. The paint felt smoother than any of the others. The only draw back for me as the applicator was that P21S was the most difficult to remove of all the waxes. Each spit shine layer was progressively harder to remove.

The second in our unofficial test results was Mother’s carnauba. It was third in the first layer test but moved up in our categories each layer. Although it never passed P21S it did pass the other two convincingly.

Third place went to Souveran. In all of the tests it placed only as an, “all right.. just OK...nothing really special”. I have to say that I was really disappointed in third place for Souveran. I had come to believe that Souveran was my favorite go-to carnauba product.

Fourth place went to Zymol. I want to thank DC member JngrBrdman for supplying the Zymol.
From first application to the last application. My tester had nothing good to say about the wax. Was not impressed with it at all. Texture was the first thing mentioned. She thought the wax was thicker and very oily. I must admit that there is no oily finish on the paint after 12 hours of cure time.

All in all I had a very good time doing this. I took my time and tried to be fair in my application techniques. The results I know are very subjective but to be honest I know that my wife’s help on this was not biased at all. Here are the after pictures. My camera got dirty and failed to open the lens so I did not get before pictures.

Imagine the hood tape off looking at the hood . The items were placed starting with P21S in the upper left corner. Then going clockwise Mother’s in the upper right. Zymol lower right. Pinnacle Souveran lower left. I cannot honestly tell the difference at this time. Will up date this thread later when I see some changes.

Great review! You'll really enjoy the long term results. Wait till you have driven in a storm and you see the reaction of slush and dirt on the different waxes. Visually you may not see much of a difference now, but just wait... I've compared those waxes before and I am looking forward to seeing if you get the same results I got.

I tried to reply to your PM, but I think there is something jacked up with the DC pm system. It locked up the browser and I really didn't feel like typing it all again. lol Anyway, you did a good job with this review. Keep up the good work! Keep an eye on it for about a month. You should really start to see some differences at that point. Thanks for the great review!

Wow! This is a great test. I'm just curious though if you applied all four waxes with the same technique. I have Zymol Vintage in my arsenal and I have found that if you don't apply it with your bare hands that the results are totally different.

All the waxes were applied with yellow foam pad with crystal mist as the QD when i did the spit shining part of the test. I did put one layer on with a yellow pad with out spit shining to start.

I felt that the sample I recieved would not be adequate to put on by hand to complete the test. You may be right in that application should have been by hand.

Would certainly be willing to do it by hand if the resources were there for me to get it done. any suggestion...? :naughtyD

I think your application methods are definitely a factor in the performance of the Zymol. Hand application is actually much more economical in terms of product usage than using a foam applicator. So, a smaller amount is required. I would send you another sample myself, but my supply is almost empty and I didn't get the free refills container.

I didn't find much difference when I applied it by hand or applicator. I did a half and half application technique test and saw no difference in durability or looks. The only difference was that using it by hand uses way more product and it is harder to buff off. Seems like a waste for such an expensive product.

It certainly appears that you are correct. If my wife is any judge. Although the appearance after a few days is equal as of this moment. I do not think that the pictures adequately project just how equal they are at this time.

Thanks for even considering to send a sample. Wish I were a man of means rather than a seasonal construction worker. I would like to be able to test this product and many others if it were not for the cost.

OK. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree then as I have had the exact opposite experience.

climate differences, car differences, prep differences... Everybody always gets different experiences depending on a number of factors. To the individual it only matters what experience THEY have and not so much what other people experience. His climate and vehicle and products used for prep are totally different from what we used so he may provide a third result that neither of us got. That's what's so great about product testing. :)

Definitely, there are a lot of factors which go into the result.

Re: carnuaba wax comparisons(updated12-29-05)

Have been noticing a few spots becoming more prevalent each day for the last ten days. Have not washed the vehicle in that time but have been using Poorboy’s S&W to clean the surface after a CCD. It is getting gritty to the touch

Since the surface is becoming gritty and S&W is not taking it off the surface Do you think that washing is the more prudent option at this time. Since S&W is not taking it off with a micro fiber do you think a wool wash mitt with Poorboy’s SS&S will take the gritty substance off?

The reason that I ask is.... I do not want to induce marring in the surface with the wash mitt. Have been having good luck with just minor marring using a qd and MF towels.

Am not able to detect any difference in any of the carnuaba’s at this time. Everything seems to be diminishing quickly. Clarity, texture, and shine are all more sudued. Unlike the sides of the vehicle which do not have any of the problems that are on the hood but the sides of the vehicles have a newer application of Liquid Souveran that was put on over Souveran paste about six days after the test was started.

Re: carnuaba wax comparisons...up dated photo's 1-22-06

have updated photo's of the hood with the recent rain we have been experiencing.

have been noticing what I percieved as diminished protection. The feel of the paint is noticeably less slick. The shine seems muted or not as vivid. I have to admit that it still looks good. It seems to attract and embed dust. Something that i personally dislike. It is making me like carnuabas less and less.

What I thought was diminished protection may not be the case. You tell me when comparing week old pictures to the updated ones taken this morning.

Does it look like the same beading characteristics as the first shots that I took a montha ago???? I cannot tell one carnuaba from the other. Look and feel are all similar. So are the beading charcteristics as far as I can tell.

What do you think????

Re: carnuaba wax comparisons...up dated photo's 1-22-06

I looks to me like you actually have less large beading and more smaller/uniform beading now than when "fresher." :online2lo

Here is a picture of the first rain on the carnauba as was previously mentioned in the update

Here is the second picture of the update on the carnuaba test.

here is a picture today of what it looks like after six weeks. I believe it has served it life and needs to be replaced

Another thing that I would like to add to this is the fact that other than the intial test when applied I was not able to tell one carnauba from the other. The shine and durability as the pictures have shown were all consistant. Not one stood out over the other on my vehicle.

Here is a picture of a week old sealant. This is the type of beading that I want on my vehicle. Carnauba’s look nice but the shine fails to quickly and as we all know the durability is short lived. In my estimation I will only be applying carnauba’s on top of sealants in the future. I do not like them as a stand alone product.

Any questions or comments? This is the end of my carnauba test and updates.

I am thinking of doing a test myself, but with more products and an array of colors and prep porducts. I have the time, but I need to detirmine the products I'd like to test.
